Brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal

IMG_8786

I normally take a recorder to capture dj sets, however there is always something falling foul of the correct alignment of the planets: forgetting the press the record button, running out of juice aka batteries when the power cable is too short to reach the socket….there is always a crap reason.  The run of DJ session’s this year has been memorable for more than a minute, from the Las Terasitas beach in Santa Cruz, Mojo Club in Las Palmas, GCMN at Druga Godba Festival in Llubljana, Clandestino Festival, Micromusic TEA, the Keroxen do’s in Tenerife and in Los Jameos del Agua, Womad Fuerteventura and all points inbetween.

Inspired by and for those that turned up throughout the year, and also the people behind the voices or stories and artists contained within.

Ingredients: Guantanamo Stories from Shaker Aamer, recently released from the Yankee enclave in Cuba; political discourse and opinions from Yanis Varoufakis, whose book The Global Minotour has got me wrapped up.  Also some news from Palestine / Occupied Territories via Electronic Intifada. The Arabic discussion before that piece, is taken from a documentary about divorce in Iran.

Regarding the music and sound, contributions from the likes of Batida, Maga Bo, El Mahdy Jr. Kink Gong, The Bug, Kode9, Stereotyp, Tupperwear, Morgan Craft, KingLMan, Kiki Hitomi, Mohammed Al Madloul, Waipoo Petchsuphan, Public Enemy, Stock Hausen & Walkman; MF Doom, SK Simeon, Machinedrum, Oh No, DJ Vadim, Sol Monk, Fun’da’mental, DJ Spinn, Danny Brown, Muslimguaze, Rootsman, 16 Bit vs. Dj Leo, Manolo Viera, Job Ledesma, Mizz Beats, Jeru The Damaja, Nochexxx, Sensational, Walter Gross, theUnderachievers, The Beastie Boys, Audio Two, Gil Scott Heron, Namebrandsound, Source Direct, CDM, and RP Boo. There could be several names missing, hope it doesn’t hurt.

Fun-da-mental ‘Audio Shrapnel’ XFM Superchunk

fdm_100nations6

First broadcast in December 2001 for the Eddie Temple-Morris & James Hyman program on XFM.  Big respect to DJ Overhaul who constructed the final mix on his jack after my back put me on ice for a few days.  It represents the manner to which we hit gigs in the short time we threw down as the Nation World Service / Audio Shrapnel DJ team, throwing everything into the pile.  (Thanks to Suki for the tracklist)

KEROXEN13

It’s that time again, time to get things rolling for this years edition of KEROXEN. It’s where music, plastic arts, visuals and dance collide in a refurbished oil refinery tank in the middle of Santa Cruz, Tenerife. Last year saw performances fromZa!, Chupaconcha, Pony Bravo, Unicornbot, Filastine, King Midas Sound, The Bug with Miss Red, Oswaldoh and D. Juan León,  Diego Hdez, Frank Wild Year, Pierre Bastien, G.A.F. and Socos Dúo among others.  We are going the crowdfunding route as last year, for the cash to build it, stay with us for more news, or bookmark Keroxen.com should the desire take you. Thanks to Klallam Digital Works for all the intense hours of recording the videos and to all those that came out and supported the massive effort of the team, much appreciated for real.

King Midas Sound – New movements

IMG_0285

King Midas Sound open a new chapter

Vocalist Roger Robinson explains: “We’ve set our sights on where drone melancholy and fuzz blisteringly collide. The sweet voices on Waiting for You have a hint of bitterness now. One journalists who’d seen some of the live material described it as an apocalyptic “My Bloody Valentine in Dub” I think that goes some way to  describe what it’s like.” Read more at Fact

New single Aroo / Funny Love will be released next week.

The Bug in your bassbin – Live shows New Video, New EP

IMG_0523
Kevin Martin pka The Bug is on a serious-as-cancer march. One of the most dedicated producers going, the one I have had the pleasure of having my ears and body destroyed by, is currently getting ready to drop a set at SWSX, as well as few other dates in North America. He is armed with MC’s Miss Red and Daddy Freddy for these live dates. Come late May, his label Ninja Tune will release Filthy, an EP featuring Flowdan, Daddy Freddy, Danny fuckin’ Brown and Kiki Hitomi of King Midas Sound. How’s that for a tenner?  The video below gives you the Flowdan and Daddy Freddy contributions within one clip. Flip it.

It was a top night, the crew that built the sound system worked damn hard, basically worked 24hours straight through. We had 10 columns of speakers arranged in a circular fashion….and to think somebody (Kevin) said “One of my monitors isn’t working!”  Well, to be fair, he didn’t say it, he had to shout!

Millions of Thanks to the Keroxen team for having the faith.  We’ll be back

Ear Con68 / Bug + Wattage Ear Raid2

The  Bug Man took some time out from the studio and touring to have a holiday.  Where better to come than here?

K-Mart is definitely one of the hard working and most committed people I have ever had the luck to to come across.  I heard plenty of new and old crackers this week.  Some of that new Bug stuff, which he will drop on us in due time.  Keep your eyes and ears peeled for the King Midas Sound remix album,  It’s a remix album with a difference, that’s all I’m sayin’.

This week’s set put together by sharing time and tuneage like when we  both lived in BabyLonDonZooLand.  Could not fit everything in 60minutes, part three will come soon, dig this for now.

Going out tonight via sunhole dot net at 22hGMT and eFM on Saturday at 16h CET, as part of The Magic Show.
