Tonight set is comprised of random bits that are in the box for upcoming gigs.  Between Friday and next week Saturday, hay muchas opportunidades para escuchar buena musica.  Tengo tres sesiones, Txola, La Laguna este viernes, sabado a Rollercoaster Fstvl, Santa Cruz y el dia 18 de septiembre, Boreal Fstvl, Los Silos.  No hay escusa. Wash away the end of summer blues.

Got some newsness via the label behind Pavel Dovgal, Obba Supa, John Robinson & Lewis Parker,  Project Mooncircle.  They have an album, titled ‘Finest Ego’ dropping next month. Chock full  of Japanese beat makers following in the footsteps of Krush, Hide, Sak. Stepping up to the boards are  BudaMunk, a.z, Daisuke Tanabe, The Astronotes, Dj Olive Oil, FERRARI, RLP, SATO, Ogiyy, ichiro_, Eccy & Himuro Yoshiteru.

My first experience of Negativland was the album Helter Skelter, featuring ‘Christianity is Stupid’.  It’s an concept album, which I’m not gonna get into right now, however it’s a brilliant cut and paste work.  More juice on Negativland? Go to the source.

Ear Con 27 – Don’t Spit Here

When in London a couple weeks ago, getting prepped for the Fun-da-mental – Taqwacore gig, the local council where FDM head-honco Aki  Nawaz and many a man from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan live,  has embarked on a program to highlight the ‘nastiness’ of spitting pan, the equivelent of chewing tabacco.  Anti-pan spitting propaganda competes with the beautiful sari’s for your attention.

A day after returning home, the “King of Ghetto-Tech” Maga Bo came to Tenerife on his way to  the Fuerteventura en Musica festival.  One of the digital gifts he dropped on me was the Audiofile Collective’s ‘Do Not Spit Here and There‘  project.  If you’ve never been to the Indian sub-continent, this CD is a very good  Lonely Planet audio guide.  If you have been to the Indian sub-continent, it’s  a very good  audio photo –  field-recordings of prayer calls, dhols, traffic horns, markets, radio scans, airplanes, discussions, cinema audiences and the like neatly mixed, like twenty-four hours compressed into 30 minutes, Chris Watson style.

A healthy portion of ‘Do not spit here and there’ take up the opening of todays program. The Kominas, with whom we shared the Meltdown festival stage come in with their edgy take on matters.

As usual, being in London meant meeting up with Kevin ‘The Bug’ Martin at Sounds of the Universe, before it was ‘tart o’clock’.  At Sound…we delved into re-pressings of Ruddy & Redeye Original Sounds 7’s, like Wayne Marshall’s Gunshot, and Errol Bellot’s What A Wonderful Feeling.  I also picked up one of the first  tunes I recall, U-Roy’s ‘Welding’.

Tody’s program also opens it’s doors to The Dead Kennedys’ Kill The Poor, Cutty Ranks, Kode9, an exclusive from Adrian Sherwood featuring Congo Ashanti Roy and the late Mikey Dread inna bass-heavy drop – Blackanized from Glasgow with ‘What a G’waan?’;  Ricky Ranking with his first outing for Roots Manuva’s Banana Klan label….oh speaking of Roots Manuva, The Bug gave this head a blast of a couple tunes from the version album of London Zoo, and yes, finally the long desired pairing of Roots and The Bug will come out soon.  Oh check this too, Public Enemy remixed by The Bug.  Yeah, that’s right, now your panting like the cats outside my house that are in serious heat.

Also kicking the stuffing out of weak speakers is Timeblind with the environmentally sound Rastabomba, giving a discourse on the use of solar panels and other The Man trick you to using dere tings when all the goodness is here all about, and how dem/we pollute all de wata, unnastand?

Hopefully you’ll dig it, tune in via Sunhole dot net at 22h00 tonight

Open wide, it’s Filastine – Ear Conditioning Transmission 20

Nomad Filastine goes from one extreme to the other, last week in Siberia and Russia, this week, here in Tenerife for the show at Honky Tonk in Santa Cruz.  As part of the organizing team for Boreal Festival I’ve long considered Filastine to be more than appropriate for the festival considering it’s environmental objective and perspective.  Filastine lives it, doesn’t just talk it, he’s prepared to take the train rather than fly should it be possible.  He’d prefer to stay in a locally-owned hotel, no multi-national hotel chains.  He likes the venue where he’s to perform to not have throw-away cups for drinks.  The earth doesn’t need us, but we need it.

This week the bait for the unsuspecting is laid with a techno- tribal offering with Osaka, a new joint from Sonarpilot, remixed by Simbad. The record from which this comes, Mothership Remixed, also features a remix by Ramadanman.

Another new cut to surface is ‘Gadget Go Go’ from Chali 2Na, yes he of Jurassic 5ive and Ozomalti.  He steps out on his own for a Rusko-produced club banger.

Leading into a mix from Filastine we have  that new taster from El-P, Whores, The Movie and a Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry track that I don’t have a title for, but I think it’s from the Blackboard Jungle album period.

Tune in via Sunhole at 22h00, then cop the experience at Honky Tonk on Saturday.

Ear Conditioning / Transmission 18 – Flying High

Can’t shake that juvenile feeling of excitement regarding a record release.  Instead of running down to the record shop to get the first copy, it’s turn on the ‘puter and check the inbox.  When ordering the cd or vinyl of the Flying Lotus ‘Cosmogramma’ album via Bleep one gets an mp3 of said album sent out on day of release also.

Did anyone else get an empty file?

The postman dropped the cd at my door before I could say boo to Bleep.

Being born in the sixties, I was captured by the sight of men going into space.  However, btrothers never had a connection with space until George Clinton/Parliament-Funkadelic and Sun-Ra.  We watched as a few white men went into orbit, walked, played golf, and drove cars on the moon, and collected rocks.  It was George and Sun-Ra that brought space to us, looking at the cosmos, it’s properties and it’s mysteries in the quest.  From Chocolate City to The Mothership Connection.  With Flying Lotus, it’s from Los Angeles to The Comsos. Cosmogramma,  a space beat odyssey .  Searching within to capture some of dreams and possibilities of where one can go, reside, exist, partake of, explore, seek.

Funk.  That’s one of the things that separates Flying Lotus from a lot of those that bite his sound.  He’s got a profound sense of funk that the others miss.  A few numbers on Cosmogramma rides on deep bass drawl of Stephen (Thundercat) Brunner, (Suicidal Tendencies/Eryka Badu/Shafiq Husayn).

Rebekah Raff’s control of the harp provides a a perfect floating companion and guide.  Dorian Concept, Thom Yorke, Ravi Coltrane and Laura Darlington don’t fall asleep at the wheel either.

Ear Conditioning Transmission 17 – The Speaker Spazm

Ras G is one of the artists I wanted for this year’s Clandestino Festival, however with limited space and less money than in previous years,we found ourselves a bit stuck.  However there will now be a Clandestino stage at the Way Out West Festival, so we’ve got Ras booked to do a set there in August. Recording-wise, our man returns  with a six track EP of abstract dub-hop head pressure for Matthewdavid’s Leaving Records. With ‘El Alyien Part 1′  Ras is at his most esoteric. Bong-eyed blend of rich field recordings and crackly samples knitted togther with a bed of psychoactively charged subbass. Forward yout’!

If you live in Athens there’s a good chance you know of the Barcelona in Athens crew.  Nikos who runs things there dropped me a track from the forthcoming album from Palyrria, uptempo horny Mediterranean balkan pressure.

As mentioned here a few days ago, Filastine will be bringing his sonic assault to the shores of Tenerife next month, so here’s another excuse to crank it up with a track from the Extra Dirty Bomb EP.

Caribou step up with a new album called Swim. The track  Odessa has been given the David Wrench treatment, and it comes in the form of a drumcappela, which you can cop for nought over at RCDLBL.

I don’t know what direction I was looking in when Ninja Tune released the single by Andreya Triana late last year.  The Flying Lotus mix of Lost Where I Belong is absolutely gorgeous, lush heart-tugging harp movements and what I think is Thundercat on bass, bottom end, soulful bliss.

The following will be broadcast tonight on Sunhole at 22h00 GMT

Ear Conditioning – The Speaker Spazm / Transmission 17

Ear Conditioning – Transmission 8 / Living in Small Spaces

Ear Conditioning / Living in Small Places

Gotta be brief, the potaje (Canarian stew) is on the stove, and I’m salivating like Pavlov’s Dog.

Check out Debruit.  The monies from his Spatio Temporel EP are being donated to Haiti Relief.  The beats are good too!

When lining up the program for this week, I took the Faust CD of the shelf, put it in the thing, and pressed play.  When the sound came out the speakers I thought I had put in a Flying Lotus track that I’d never heard of by mistake.

The Playgroup contribution is the original Playgroup, not the Trevor Jackson Playgroup, but the Playgroup that was made up of Adrian Sherwood, Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, Bruce Smith, George Oban and Style Scott.

iTunes think that people that buy the Gazzillion Ear EP by Doom will be offended by the word ‘whore’ so it appears as Green W**** Net when you purchase it from the site.

Fujako is fucked up and so is Dälek.

Leroy Young, The Grandmaster is not, but what he talks about is, at times.

  • Doudou N’daiye Rose – Saber Saf Sap (Virgin France)

Ear Conditioning / Transmission 4 – Extremities

From one corner to another, hence the title of this week’s adventure.  Starting with South African township business with Malombo, heading to some Balkan horny horns courtesy of the ever dependable Crammed Discs.  Montreal’s Poirier heads down south for a collaboration on another dependable source of quality tuneage that is Zizek.

Another joint from the forthcoming Massive Attack album, Hegioland.  This time the featured vocalist is Damon Albarn.

In shops now  is volume four of Starkey’s Street Bass Anthems.  Pulled from this album is Slugabed’s psychotic rinse of ‘Simon Says’ by Pharoahe ‘fucking’ Monch.

Someone that is definitely waking people up is Jay Electronica.  His ‘Exhibit C’ has taken the rap world by storm, it’s just a right pisser that you can only get the track from the US itunes store.  Am I missing something?  Anyway to sooth those of us that don’t have access to US iTunes is the J.Dilla beat of  ‘Suckas’.

On the subject of beats, Flying Lotus takes on ‘Evil Man’ by Shafiq Husayn.  This is from a new 10″ vinyl that also features a remix of Cheeba by J.Rocc, as well as the original mix of Evil Man.

William S. Burroughs has something to say as Public Image Limited, Diplo, Dalt Wisney and Drumcunt, who I wrote about yesterday.

Plenty to get your ears around this week.

Tune in tonight via Sunhole at 22h00.

Radio Norte are back on the case, and you can catch up with last weeks program tonight at 20h30…apparently.
