Scalper: Perfume

Back for another hit. That’ll Scalper I’m taking about.   Along for the ride this time is RiotMiloo on vocals for the sweet smelling bran’ new tune from The Emperor’s Clothes album.  He has been over in Europe this summer for some shows, and will be back soon.  Keep an eye out.

If you wanna cop his joints, or check out more, man has a website, don’t be shy, he doesn’t bite.  (Correction: He may do actually, sorry for the misinformation.)

Africa HiTech – Lash Out

One Two
Africa HiTech is Steve Spacek and Mark Pritchard.

Hitecherous is the new package.

Lash Out oscillates beyond reason, rubberoom style and the snare slaps you ’bout yer face, and slices of synths inject the grimey rave sentences, yeah it works.
One Two is pure bashment carnival rhythm vibes rolling about the place as Spacek takes the mic, while appropriate sound effects back up  certain lyrics, cleaver. Scalper was telling about this creative production method, but never did I get around to it due to a faulty piece of kit. Anyway it bounces nicely, gals dem love it yes.

Warp is the label

Ear Conditioning / Transmission 10 – Air Force One

Phew, that’s another wait over.  The wait being yesterday’s release of the Gonjasufi album, A Sufi and a Killer.  I thought the album title referred to Gonja and his main production partner on this record, The Gaslamp Killer, but apparently not, it’s the two sides of the man, the peaceful tranquil yoga teacher, and then the somebody who would not hesitate to break a motherfucker off some, should it need to occur.

It’s a trippy record for sure, don’t get me wrong Gonja, this album woulda worked wonders on the set of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

A batch of records that I ordered some five months back arrived yesterday too, one of them being the Black Comm album.  Black to Comm is Marc Ricther, and his album Alphabet 1968 is a radio transmission from over yonder, static,  glockenspiels, loops, and distant voices escaping into the atmosphere.

Also in the package was the Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics collaboration on Strut.  Yesss!

I’ve always got time for Jnerio Jarel, a man of many aliases.  His Dr. Who Dat? guise was the one that dropped on my lap first, and I’m keeping tabs on him for sure now.

The ariel is also alert for James Blake.

Hyperdub kick of the new decade in fifth gear, courtesy of DVA, and the link strengthens with Zomby having a go at Martyn’s ‘Hear Me’.

Ear Conditioning Transmission 12.01.10

Still in the mode to wish prosperity, justice, health, love to those that thoroughly deserve it for twentyten, dos mil dies, 2010.  We’ve got two years before than Mayan shit kicks off, so let’s do it like its 1999.

Powers that be do their very best to complete fuck this up for the majority of the worlds population, but within that majority are those you in turn do their best to fight the power, fight the amnesia, fight the those that should know better, fight the racists, suppress the anger to laugh at the ignorance, oppress the oppressor, see through the deceit and return fire with whatever materials are at their disposal.

The first new program of the year presents a cut from the new Scalper album, Flesh & Bones. My former collegue in Fun-da-mental is now based in Auckland, Aeoteroa / New Zealand.  If only the immigration authorities had known what was behind the smile of Nadeem Shafi, they might have thought twice about letting into the country.  You can find him by following the trail of bloodied remains.  Flesh & Bones will be released next month.

Mutamassik is holding her own with a track from last years Commo EP.  She’s got production skills that I am in search of.

I had no idea until last week that Oh No is the brother of Madlib.   For his latest project Dr. No’s Ethiopium, think Mulatu Astatke, the Ethiopiques, Mahmoud Ahmed on the the Beat Konducta tip, and your at the right place.

Maga Bo is currently a little bit north of here, dropping his sound grenades in Portugal, Germany and Holland.  In case you didn’t feel like showing up, his Outra Terra Mix tape is streamable at his site, which is reachable on by pinching his name at the beginning of this paragraph. It’s 100% Bo-productions with input from the phat likes of  Jahdan Blakkamoore (Brooklyn), BNegão (Rio de Janeiro), Poirier (Montreal), Filastine (Barcelona), Pacheko (Caracas), Fletcher (Cape Town), Dr. Das (London), Matona (Zanzibar), Abena Koomson (NYC), Teba (Cape Town), Xuman (Dakar), Speed Freaks (Rio de Janeiro) and  many more.

Poirier releases the Low Ceiling EP  next month on Ninja Tune,  his management have been kind enough to share it with us, so we are going with the suitably titled Marathon – you have to be physical fit for dis one.

Grenouille was called in to sprinkle some of his dust on King L Man’s Red Label No. 1.

And that’s the lot radio-wise for this week.  Tune into Sunhole Radio Tuesday at 22h00 (GMT) for the shot.

Ear Conditioning – The Adventure / Transmission 12.01.2010

  • Oh No – Pussy (Stones Throw)

In case you do feel like showing up, I’ll be at Txola, La Laguna on Friday, and Saturday I’ll be doing it with Famille Bou Bess and maybe other guest vocalists at Cafe Quilombo in La Orotava.  This night is a benefit for an friend of FBB who was illegally placed in prison after being charged with piloting a boat with thirty Africans without papers through the gates of European paradise.  He needs some funds to fight his case, so if your up for helping out, it would be great.  It’s only three euros.

Ear Conditioning – Body Rock

The head-nodding, body rocking, mind-bending experience.

It had to happen, didn’t it?

What?

Dublicker, a bass-heavy take on Aphex Twin’s Windowlicker. Thanks to Generation Bass for posting the link.

The Clandestino Festival, have just announced the dates for next years event, 11-14 June, and I’m onboard again, as part of the curating team.  One of the highlights will surely be Staff Benda Bilili.  The rumba-based sound this band from Kinshasa, threw me a curveball alright.  Glad to say I caught it.

My man Scalper pointed me in the direction of Fujako, who are linked up with the Wordsound label, another bed of quality, (Sensational)

The mix that accompanied the ecent post on a decades worth of Boom Bap did the job, digging out gems such as KRS-Ones’s Return of the Boom Rap.

The head-nodding, body rocking, mind-bending experience.

Connections – Minsk Calling

UNS_CD_Cover

In 2007, a gathering of like minds took place in Minsk, Belarus. The occasion was Unsound Minsk and featured Pole along side local artists, and it must have been good as it gave birth to collaborations between artists from Western Europe and Belarus. Alongside the aforementioned Pole, there is Pinch, Buben, Jacek Sienkiewicz & Arciom Kaveluski, Minorscene, The National Fanfare of Kadebostany. That’s right, I never heard of them either until now, and that’s the point. I hadn’t heard of Flying Lotus or Parliament/Funkadelic until I did, get me?  You may have an idea what Pinch and Pole sound like, what about Kassian Troyer?  His contribution would not be out of place on Chris Watson enviromental recording. Top dog!

The following tracks are available as a free download (proper quality too, not that 96kbps bullshit) and cd’s will also be given away at four events that are taking place about now in Krakow and Minsk.

See here for more information.

For this week’s radio program I’m dropping the album in it’s entirety, all backing it up with the following: contributions from Scalper, ‘Zero’ (from his forthcoming debut album which I mentioned last week); ‘Simple’ from the remastered Funcrusher Plus album by Company Flow, and a blast of South Africa’s hip hop crew Basemental Platform, their sound was very left-field like Co-Flow, disjointed beats somehow fitting together in a mind-bending kinda way. I lost the album that I had, but luckily I have two tracks burned on a cd. So that’s the radio program sorted for this week.

Ear Conditioning – Connections Special

  • Pinch Meet Pavel – Poison / Remedy
  • I/Dex vs. Pole – Minsk
  • The National Fanfare of Kadebostany – Untitled
  • Milf meets Minorscene – Constans (White Jack Dub)
  • Jacek Sienkiewicz & Arciom Kaveluski featuring Minorscene – Alfabet
  • Kassian Troyer – Plant Shift
  • Buben vs. Hermann Muntzing – Counterbalance
  • The Vulva String Quartet w/ Eugene, B. Twisted, Uladzimir Likhaswhapka – Live at Cafe Planeta
  • Company Flow – Simple (Def Jux)
  • Basemental Platform – Title Unknown
  • Scalper – Zero
