Fun-da-mental ‘Audio Shrapnel’ XFM Superchunk

fdm_100nations6

First broadcast in December 2001 for the Eddie Temple-Morris & James Hyman program on XFM.  Big respect to DJ Overhaul who constructed the final mix on his jack after my back put me on ice for a few days.  It represents the manner to which we hit gigs in the short time we threw down as the Nation World Service / Audio Shrapnel DJ team, throwing everything into the pile.  (Thanks to Suki for the tracklist)

Ear Conditioning 48 – The Show

When I was working as a press officer for Virgin Records, one of the most interesting gigs I had on my plate was going with the band Les Negresses Vertes to Beirut in 1991.  The reason being them giving the  first concert by a ‘Western’ band since the war started eighteen years previous.  One day we had a  trip via bus around the city and surrounding areas,  “This is the spot that Terry Waite was kidnapped.” The window next to the seat where my butt was parked had a bullet hole roughly head-height as in the photo above.  That photo is from the recent bruh hah hah between the Korean states.  It just seems that we are living in a big show, a massive production, whereby we are the actors and also the witnesses to absurdities seemingly without precedent. The current WikiLeaks furor is a case in point.  Very little political blow-back for those that masterminded murder, rape, pillage. No major heads on a platter. The political arena is awash with corruption that goes unpunished in most cases and accountability is just another word in the dictionary.  For it to be more than a collection of words that move air, it seems that it would require death.  So be it, but not Julian Assange’s as some commentators have said.

It’s one big fucking Show.

Now sports…..

Mr. Oizo‘s 2005 lp,  “Moustache (Half A Scissor)” album gets a re-release via Flying LotusBrainfeeder label.  Listen to the album and it all makes sense.  Apparently his label at the time F-Com just didn’t get it.

Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings have brought in Lefto and Simbad to help craft some new releases from all the records they come across in the search for the perfect beat.  Worldwide Family is a new series that sees Gilles Peterson hand over compiling duties to trusted friends of the label. Exile / grooveman Spot / Onra / TOKiMONSTA / Trilogy / Airhead / Illum Sphere / Cooly G / Zed Bias / Seiji / KU BO… and a whole host of under-the-radar talent. Volume one hits the streets Jan. 3/2011

Also due soon on Brownswood is the debut album from GhostpoetPeanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam continues a fine tradition of spoken word delivery with this man from Coventry, UK. The single, Cash & Carry Me Home is released next month, with the album to follow in February.  Tonally there is a similarity to Roots Manuva, same too with their drawl.  To be checked.

My man in Auckland, Stinky Jim, yes he, of the long running Stinky Grooves radio program on bFM and label RoundTripMars, has offered some free nuggets via the label website.  We sampled a twist on Horace Andy’s Skylarking by Jefferson Belt.  More available via the link in the tracklisting.

Thrown in near the end is a remix of Fun-da-mental’s ‘B4 I Leave’ from the Japanese edition of the ‘All is War’ album.  We’ll be making that and the other exclusive remix available to you soon…..ya dig?!

Ear Conditioning 32 – Adjust the Treble and Bass

Crash, bang, wollop.  Today’s program was almost wrapped up until I checked the inbox.  Freshly minted beats and rhymes from the Foreign Beggars.  Following on from their ‘United Colours of Beggattron’ album, Beggatron REmixed 2, a package that’s pushing some weight. Detroit legend Dabrye, Om Unit, Planas (Ranking Records), Blue Daisy (Black Acre), Diverse Concepts and world dj champ and producer DJ Troubl & Dj 2 Tall. Guest vocalists include rappersJehst, Kashmere, Ben Sharpa (Pioneer Unit South Africa), American soulstress and ex – Macy Gray/Plantlife vocalist Audra Nishita and newly celebrated Graziella of Miss Frank

Starting the proceedings this week however we have Mech, a producer from Gran Canaria.  For his contribution to the program, he’s taken a classic isa and rewired the components to bring traditional Canarian folk music into the age of now.  Mech is part of the Colectivo +0 crew, who are in the midst of putting together an event featuring Mech and myself in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria at the beginning of October.  More details as they come in.

Ninja Tune are celebrating twenty years in the game, and hence they are about to release an absolutely massive box set, featuring lord knows how many tracks.  The package clocks in at around 60 tracks or something.  In line with this, Ninja are giving away a track a week via their website, hence The Herbalizer contribution, remixed by Roots Manuva, who also has his own remix package coming out next month.

Sitting on my shelf is an album by the folks that put together the All Tomorrow’s Parties.  I haven’t dug this album out in a long time, which is a crime.  Who is on it?  Boards of Canada, Autechre, Mike Ladd, Co Flow, Cannibal Ox, Prefuse 73, Tortoise for starters.  Seek and enjoy.

Without a doubt, one of the pioneers in electronic music was World Domination Enterprises.  They captured a vibe that was present in London in the late ’80’s, alongside the likes of Renegade Soundwave, Mutoid Waste Company, and that Jack Dangers produced band whose name as presently escaped me, Meat Beat Manifesto.  While recently in London, I passed by the building that used to be home for the Mute group of labels.  Mute have now moved within the offices of EMI, however the new building on the former Mute site, is now called Miller House, in honour of Mute founder Daniel Miller, how about that?!

Coming back to now, we have a track from the long player from Mala, a collection of three vinyl slabs for you to meditate on.

Well that should do you for now.

Tune in via Sunhole dot net from 22h00 GMT tonight.

Oh, in case you do feel like showing up, I’ll be at Txola este viernes desde 23h00

InnerOuterWider Space

echodeck_1

This week’s program delves into space.

Usually the week of Womad Las Palmas the program is kinda dedicated to the festival, but change is good, so we’ll save the muesli-eating, sandal-wearing stuff for another time okay.

As I was saying, space….the result of speaking with the Bugman Martian over the weekend. We spoke of influences, gigs we’d like to witness, the death of record shops, blah, blah, blah.  Adrian Sherwood was/is a major influence on us both and the work he did on the Primal Scream album ‘Echo Dek’  is a favourite without a doubt.  Speaking of Adrian, then you have to mention Prince Far I.  Through his work with Adrian I was introduced to the voice of Prince Far I.  Yeah, he was the man too, however he was senselessly cut down over some stupidness in Jamaica. Bloody annoying, finding out about an artist, musician, writer, politician whatever, wanting to find out more, to see them live, and to find out they are six feet under…bloody annoying indeed.  But I digress…so we have more explorations from 4Hero, from the Macro Dub Infections album that Mr. Martian compiled for Virgin Records.  4Hero weren’t ones to play safe, and witnessed by their contribution, The Paranormal in 4 Forms, not your typical drum and bass fare, at all.  Which reminds me, Roy Ayers, with whom 4Hero collaborated several times will be at this years Womad Festival, so if your in the area and fancy some quality, get your butt down to Las Palmas, it’s free.

  • King Midas Sound – Outer Space (Hyperdub)
  • Augustus Pablo – Pablo in Moonlight City (Pressure Sounds)
  • Roots Manuva – Tears (Big Dada)
  • Matty G – 50000 Watts – Loefah Remix
  • Mark Stewart – Loner (Crippled Dick)
  • Salvador Dali
  • Flying Lotus – Parisian Goldfish – Take Remix (Warp)
  • Paul Schultz – Throat Full of Stars (Virgin)
  • King Midas Sound – Earth a Kill Ya (Hyperdub)
  • Primal Scream vs. Adrian Sherwood – Wise Blood (Creation)
  • Prince Far I – Shuffle and Deal (Blood and Fire)
  • Dr. Alimantado – Mash It Up (Blood and Fire)
  • 4 Hero – The Paranormal in 4 Forms (Virgin)
