Ear Con71 – is that real?

Apologies to the listeners in Sarajevo, I had this session ready for last Saturday’s excursion via eFM, however there was no innernet connection out Botnik way where I was for the Clandestino event there.

However, back on track for this week.

New material from guitarist Morgan Craft kicking off things, and closing, for that matter. Experimentation is where it is at. The XPRiMentashun continues with Ras G and Shafiq broadcasting from their way out respective corners, dabbling in radiophonics.

German label, Project Mooncircle bring the latest package of their Finest Ego worldwide beat-producer series, this time beatheads from the UK and Ireland stand up.  On it is Seagull Mansions’ ‘Survivor’ which, like Teebs,  was a cut that was included in Gaslamp Killers ‘no track info’ mixtape ‘Hell And The Lake Of Fire Are Waiting For YOU‘.  I’ve had that CD for at least two years slowly slowly the identities of the music used on it is coming to light.  At this rate, I know the complete tracklist in fifteen years or so.  Back to the Mooncircle compilation, it’s out next month, and besides ‘Survivor’, I’ve thrown in T-Wok. More to come from this album over the next few weeks fer sure.

Does Mark Pritchard ever sleep?  With his Afrika Hi-Tech project still rolling via Warp, see new remix from Scratch DVA which is floating out there rightaboutnow, the former Global Communications man steps up again, this time teaming up with vocalist Trim for a project via Planet Mu, Pritch & Trim, simple.  It’s very English, the samples have a ’60’s British comedy film strand to them, or at least to me, I could be way off, if so, sue me.  Planet Mu are on it hard, also firing the Machinedrum album into our faces.  Brilliant programming in their son.

Washington-based Dutchman, Martyn has completed his follow up to his ‘Great Lengths’ album, and for the new joint, Flying Lotus has signed Martyn up, so it’ll come with that Brainfeeder stamp, tough.

There you have it, tune in, if you don’t just please make sure your doing something ya like.  This edition of Ear Conditioning is ‘earable via Sunhole dot net at 11h00-12h00 weekdays until the new show next Tuesday, and for my Sarajevo crew, this Saturday.  There maybe a time change from the usual 16hoo, will check.  All the beats.

Heavy Heavy Load

It’s a great week for some, a shit sandwich for others. With the posi-drive in hand, there is tons of new tunes – from the Ivory Coast, powerhouse crew CIAfrica, with /Rupture delving into the hard drives to select snyth-devastating coarse dense dancehall, switch hip hop beats, pro-black fist mentality reality lyrics. Bouncing while standing firm, no holding back, stabbing fuck-me bass-lines unleashed dropping mayhem, check ‘Babylon Advisory’  a perfect example.  Our Clandestino Festival crew have a stage at the Way Out West Festival in Gothenburg this weekend. /Rupture’s Nettle outfit will also be gracing the stage, so too  Ras G, Rango, Mutamassik. Is that good enough for ya?  On the other stages/tents will be the likes of xx, M.I.A. the Chems, Jay Electronica, Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek, Pavement, Mary Anne Hobbs…..yeah, you get it now,  it’s effing huge.

Mutamassik by the way has edited and produced a video for  Take the Hit from her latest album, That Which Death Cannot Destroy. Viewable here.  I don’t know what’s in the water in Tuscany where Mutamassik and her partner Morgan Craft live, maybe it has nothing to do with it, actually it has sweet eff all to do with how productive they are.  Morgan just made me aware of a round table discussion that he participated in with Matthew Shipp (Anti Pop Consortium, El-P, Springheel Jack) and Mark Lomax a Columbus, Ohio-based drummer, composer, and bandleader. In addition to leading his Trio, Quintet and Afro-Chamber Ensemble, Lomax has worked with, among others, Marlon Jordan, Ellis Marsalis Quintet, and Azar Lawrence. I haven’t finished reading all of it yet, you can start here in the meanwhile.

64meg of a King Midas Sound remix is the perfect counter to the lingering CIA rough-house with a spacious vinyl reverbed enhanced bliss zone.  CV313 handed over the files to Mr. Kevin Martin, and he in turn entered how much I don’t know into his studio mind. Roger Robinson’s Trini-‘scent vocals start the proceedings with a little discourse on what it’s like, how you know you’ve met the one. Hitomi takes over laying out the comforting arms.  Excellent use of space.

El-P’s third installment of the ‘Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixx‘ series hit the streets last week, in many formats.  The physical versions have an added bonus, links to download the previous two editions that were limited to 500 cds and only sold on tour.  One of the digital versions has stems of one of the beats, so you can jack and rework to your hearts content.  Skip to Passion of the Weiss for a lengthy interview with the man.

I bought the Silkie album last week, titled City Limits Vol.1, it certainly captures and re-presses that all-embracing London ting.  The opener is an epic 8 and a half minutes, he works it. This is a gorgeous album, threatening and calming. If 4Hero started out now, they would sound like Silkie.

Indigenous Resistance come back again with a Sawandi reworking of the Galdino Jesus dos Santos track that came out earlier this year.  The bass is sitting just right, and the drums criss, and they carry the terrible story of how the vocalist met the family of the murdered Galdino, and how they showed photos of his charred body, burns to over 90% of his body.  The killers, sons of the elite basically walked, after all, it was only a ‘joke’.

This week is a heavy heavy load indeed, you have to be physical fit.

Tune in via sunhole dot net tonight at 22h00GMT, otherwise you catch the repeat same place at 11h00 every weekday morning.

More as it happens,

Ear Conditioning Transmission 17 – The Speaker Spazm

Ras G is one of the artists I wanted for this year’s Clandestino Festival, however with limited space and less money than in previous years,we found ourselves a bit stuck.  However there will now be a Clandestino stage at the Way Out West Festival, so we’ve got Ras booked to do a set there in August. Recording-wise, our man returns  with a six track EP of abstract dub-hop head pressure for Matthewdavid’s Leaving Records. With ‘El Alyien Part 1′  Ras is at his most esoteric. Bong-eyed blend of rich field recordings and crackly samples knitted togther with a bed of psychoactively charged subbass. Forward yout’!

If you live in Athens there’s a good chance you know of the Barcelona in Athens crew.  Nikos who runs things there dropped me a track from the forthcoming album from Palyrria, uptempo horny Mediterranean balkan pressure.

As mentioned here a few days ago, Filastine will be bringing his sonic assault to the shores of Tenerife next month, so here’s another excuse to crank it up with a track from the Extra Dirty Bomb EP.

Caribou step up with a new album called Swim. The track  Odessa has been given the David Wrench treatment, and it comes in the form of a drumcappela, which you can cop for nought over at RCDLBL.

I don’t know what direction I was looking in when Ninja Tune released the single by Andreya Triana late last year.  The Flying Lotus mix of Lost Where I Belong is absolutely gorgeous, lush heart-tugging harp movements and what I think is Thundercat on bass, bottom end, soulful bliss.

The following will be broadcast tonight on Sunhole at 22h00 GMT

Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma LP

Flying Lotus must be the most arresting thing I’ve come across since 2008.  The first thing I heard was the remix he did for King Midas Sound, then the 2 x 3 EP and Los Angeles LP.  I’ve been trying to catch up ever since, getting my paws on the 1983 album and the Reset release, besides his production jobs for Reefer, John Robinson, and the Radiohead remix he did.  He interprets his dreams very very well.

When I drop his tunes at Txola, they are bigger that anything else I play.  He has nailed it in managing to produce music that comes not from left and right speakers, but they seem to occupy above, bottom, behind, in front as well as left and right.  And the sound system in Txola ain’t even that good!?….sorry Pedro, but you did ask me what I would like to see changed, and I did say get some bass-bins didn’t I?)

Anyway Mr. Lotus’ new album, Cosmogramma will drop first week of May, tracklisting reads as follows, and it’s good to see that Laura Darlington continues her association with him.  Also on this album, vocals from Thom Yorke.

Yes, that juvenile feeling of anticipation is moving through my veins, I love it.

01 Clock Catcher
02 Pickled!
03 Nose Art
04 Intro//A Cosmic Drama
05 Zodiac Shit
06 Computer Face//Pure Being

Ear Conditioning – Transmission 19.01.2010

Yesterday, Lamin of the Dutty Artz crew informed me that he’s got his latest mix “a series of emotions” within a thirty minute plus capsule, posted up on the DA site.  Subsequently we exchanged a few emails about the tracklist and more.  We have a shared liking of Shlohmo, a lanky nineteen year-old producer from out Cali way. His’ Tomato Squeeze’ comes in after the ten minute contribution from the second volume of Manouâat Amazighia, which I picked up in Agadir last July during the Timitar Festival.
Leading up to the release of their Hegioland album, Massive Attack come with another remix from an album track, this time She is Danger tackle ‘Girl I’m in Love’ featuring Horace Andy.  I’m finding this remix a bit more to my liking than the previous one’s associated with this album.  Looking forward to the Flying Lotus and Burial ones that are due.
Continuing on the beat tip, we’ve got Onra, Ras G, Busy, Paul White, J. Dilla, Mustang, and Dorian Concept.  Mustang is one of the aliases of Alex Attias, who I believe has moved back to his native Switzerland after years in London.  Part of the ‘broken beat’ scene with New Sector Movements, 4Hero/2000 Black, Domu, Bugz in the Attic, which in turn were all centered around the record distributor, (the name of which I can’t remember).  I heard his Purple Moon track on the Coldcut/Solid Steel show that used to run on London’s BBC station.  The next day or so, I went around to the distributor, which was around the corner from the Virgin office where I worked, Alex was there, and he gave me his last remaining white label.  Top geezer!
Mutamassik, returns with another cut from last year’s Commo EP.  That and Dr. No’s Ethiopium have been on heavy heavy rotation here this week.
Delve into the links, and enjoy the beats.
Tune in at the usual spot, Sunhole Radio tonight at 22h00

I received some gorgeous music last week with the name of Obba Supa attatched to it. Technical Development runs the mic.  His 100% London accent brings honesty, knowledge and Lewis Parker to mind. The production of  Hey!Zeus holds plenty heritage within and forward thinking with jazz-brewed off-key beats and keys that hit your soft spot with no apologies. Rewind champion of the week.

As previously mentioned this week is the global launch of the latest output from Indigenous Resistance, and what a cast included.  See below for the list of all participants, some no longer with us, but on record yes.  I’ll be dropping Routes to Rootz at the Boreal Festival this coming Saturday after Tropico 28 and Karlovy Vary take the stage.

A good friend of mine introduced me to Intik, a rap group from Algeria.  While checking the cd booklet, I noticed the name of Imhotep in the production credits for one track.  He is/was, not sure, part of French rap legends I AM.  He released a solo album which was miles away from I AM.  The album, Blueprint, published in ’98 is one of my favourites when it comes to Maghreb and contemporary beats sharing the bath water.  I played this album to whoever I could, and seriously only one person was not impressed.   You be the judge…..

Ear Conditioning / The Coup

los-presidentes-hugo-chavez-de-venezuela-y-manuel-zelaya-de-honduras

I may have written this before, and if so, I apologize, however where ever we (as in Fun-da-mental) have been this year, we are always asked for our opinion about Barak Obama.  Maybe it’s because we, along with millions of others were so dismayed, among other things with the previous President of the Free World, that Obama had the wishes of those same millions in his hands.  In recent months, I always answered the Obama question with what I perceived to be his lack of action regarding the recent coup in Honduras.  It has been pointed out that the US ambassador in Honduras during this coup was the same ambassador that was in Venezuela when the attempted coup took place there back in 2002.  Therefore the ‘change’ that we have come to expect with the new administration has not really come to fruition.  Yes of course, it’s early days and man can’t do everything within the blink of an eye, but Jesus H. Christ man!  Yesterday I saw an interview that Obama did and he was asked about the situation in Honduras, and he said that he hoped that the elected president of Honduras be returned to office sooner rather than later.  Unfortunately CNN for some reason seem to have buried this interview from the majority of their viewers. In an interview with the exiled president, Zelaya, the CNN interviewer took the view that he, Zelaya, was against the rule of law, and that Zelaya should bend over backwards to appease those that moved him from office.  As usual, things are never as clear as they seem, and CNN and other media groups seem to be doing the work of the elite while pretending to be giving a fair and balanced report of the goings-on.

Bill Maher said recently, and it pained him to say so, that he wished Obama was a bit more like his predecessor, G.W. Bush, for the simple reason that Bush did what ever he wanted to, even bypassing Congress to get his way, and no one really batted an eye.  Obama on the other hand is playing too safe, trying to appease even those that can’t stand him. Fuck them Obama, and do what you know is right, unless of course your pretending to implenting the change you promised.

The video below contains youth, passion, committment.  If you have something against either of those three, turn elsewhere now.

As for the program, well lined up for this week, more from the new ep of Ras G & The Afrikan Space Program; Martyn’s remix of Efdemin; Rodrigo y Gabriela with a track from their new album 11:11; The Canaries favourite son that is El Guincho returns with his Antillas track remixed; We kick things off with Silence by Portishead.
