Ear Con71 – is that real?

Apologies to the listeners in Sarajevo, I had this session ready for last Saturday’s excursion via eFM, however there was no innernet connection out Botnik way where I was for the Clandestino event there.

However, back on track for this week.

New material from guitarist Morgan Craft kicking off things, and closing, for that matter. Experimentation is where it is at. The XPRiMentashun continues with Ras G and Shafiq broadcasting from their way out respective corners, dabbling in radiophonics.

German label, Project Mooncircle bring the latest package of their Finest Ego worldwide beat-producer series, this time beatheads from the UK and Ireland stand up.  On it is Seagull Mansions’ ‘Survivor’ which, like Teebs,  was a cut that was included in Gaslamp Killers ‘no track info’ mixtape ‘Hell And The Lake Of Fire Are Waiting For YOU‘.  I’ve had that CD for at least two years slowly slowly the identities of the music used on it is coming to light.  At this rate, I know the complete tracklist in fifteen years or so.  Back to the Mooncircle compilation, it’s out next month, and besides ‘Survivor’, I’ve thrown in T-Wok. More to come from this album over the next few weeks fer sure.

Does Mark Pritchard ever sleep?  With his Afrika Hi-Tech project still rolling via Warp, see new remix from Scratch DVA which is floating out there rightaboutnow, the former Global Communications man steps up again, this time teaming up with vocalist Trim for a project via Planet Mu, Pritch & Trim, simple.  It’s very English, the samples have a ’60’s British comedy film strand to them, or at least to me, I could be way off, if so, sue me.  Planet Mu are on it hard, also firing the Machinedrum album into our faces.  Brilliant programming in their son.

Washington-based Dutchman, Martyn has completed his follow up to his ‘Great Lengths’ album, and for the new joint, Flying Lotus has signed Martyn up, so it’ll come with that Brainfeeder stamp, tough.

There you have it, tune in, if you don’t just please make sure your doing something ya like.  This edition of Ear Conditioning is ‘earable via Sunhole dot net at 11h00-12h00 weekdays until the new show next Tuesday, and for my Sarajevo crew, this Saturday.  There maybe a time change from the usual 16hoo, will check.  All the beats.

Mala – Digital Mystikz / Clandestino Festival

This time last year we had the opportunity to have Mala deal a DJ set at Clandestino Festival, it was class, very very dutty. Mala is not with us this year, however you can get your ear mittens around a mix he’s done for the podcast series of Xlr8r. Download here.

As for Clandestino, it’s already kicked off with Debruit laying it down at the inauguration a couple weeks ago, with the main action taking place this coming weekend.  On-board are Susheela Raman, the destroyer Mutamassik, DJ Gavana, Baloji, French beat-maker Onra, Ethiopian jazz legend Mulatu Astatke, Amazigh Kateb,  Hype Williams who recently signed to Hyperdub, Soom T & Disrupt (Jahtari), and plenty more.  I know I’ll see some of you there.  It’s my 50th birthday on the Saturday, so your welcome to join me, Aleksander, Karin, Nat, Gavana, Fasterpeace, JayStarSeven, The Nazarenes and the entire Clandestino crew for a drink or two.  Maybe I should finally decide what I want to do when I grow up,

Ear Con 55 – Ear Aid

Ear Con55 – Ear Aid

Well it goes a little like this….

Starts heavy in an ethereal manner with Justin Broadrick’s latest incarnation, that being Pale Sketcher.  We also have him  taking on Teledudngosis as TechLevel2, should you last the full coarse.

London producer Mau’lin grafts Canadian vocalist Amenta in for a floater that reminds me of The Orb’s ‘Little Fluffy Clouds’. It could be the Canadian tilt on the vocals, well, Joni Mitchell being Canadian an’ all that, anyway, yeah, there is nothing wrong with having something ‘nice’ in your life every once in awhile yaknow! Abstract off-the-wall production from Mau’lin, this guy has potential in sacks. A three tracker with two more versions of ‘Deeper Than The Sun’ will be coming out via Ho Tep very very soon.

In preparing for this years Clandestino Festival we’ve been delving through nuff nuff music.  Confirmed for edition nine, Susheela Raman, Khaira Arby, MutamassikBaloji, Onra, and also Hype Williams.  Check out the Hype vids and tunes via our friends at King Midas Sound

Shit, there was a real good radio interview with Prince Paul that I came across a few days ago, and for the life of me i can’t find the link anymore, he had some insightful things to say about his time in the studio with DeLaSoul.  Plus I’ve been bouncing around for a few weeks now with their album ‘Stakes Is High’ on repeat.  So here’s some if ya missed it.

We jump to Nigeria courtesy of Honest Jons and their Lagos All Routes compilation.  With a band name like Travellers Lodge Atomic 8, you know it has to be checked.

Bristol’s Rob Smith (a.k.a. R.S.D.) delivers a remix from Reggae Roast’s recently released Righteous EP). The London-based label has made a name for itself connecting the dots between traditional reggae music and the exploding styles of the UK bass scene, and this, its fifth release, is set to continue that reputation. The organ and horns of the original track (featuring the production of Evergreen, Landlord, and Ruckspin) are replaced with their dubbed-out counterparts, letting MC Danman’s uplifting lyrics take the lead when present.

There you have it.

It’s all ‘earable at Sunhole tonight at 22h00GMT and Saturday* 16h00-18h00 CET at eFM/Radio Studentski Sarajevo

Ear Conditioning – Transmission 19.01.2010

Yesterday, Lamin of the Dutty Artz crew informed me that he’s got his latest mix “a series of emotions” within a thirty minute plus capsule, posted up on the DA site.  Subsequently we exchanged a few emails about the tracklist and more.  We have a shared liking of Shlohmo, a lanky nineteen year-old producer from out Cali way. His’ Tomato Squeeze’ comes in after the ten minute contribution from the second volume of Manouâat Amazighia, which I picked up in Agadir last July during the Timitar Festival.
Leading up to the release of their Hegioland album, Massive Attack come with another remix from an album track, this time She is Danger tackle ‘Girl I’m in Love’ featuring Horace Andy.  I’m finding this remix a bit more to my liking than the previous one’s associated with this album.  Looking forward to the Flying Lotus and Burial ones that are due.
Continuing on the beat tip, we’ve got Onra, Ras G, Busy, Paul White, J. Dilla, Mustang, and Dorian Concept.  Mustang is one of the aliases of Alex Attias, who I believe has moved back to his native Switzerland after years in London.  Part of the ‘broken beat’ scene with New Sector Movements, 4Hero/2000 Black, Domu, Bugz in the Attic, which in turn were all centered around the record distributor, (the name of which I can’t remember).  I heard his Purple Moon track on the Coldcut/Solid Steel show that used to run on London’s BBC station.  The next day or so, I went around to the distributor, which was around the corner from the Virgin office where I worked, Alex was there, and he gave me his last remaining white label.  Top geezer!
Mutamassik, returns with another cut from last year’s Commo EP.  That and Dr. No’s Ethiopium have been on heavy heavy rotation here this week.
Delve into the links, and enjoy the beats.
Tune in at the usual spot, Sunhole Radio tonight at 22h00
  • Taslit-Laârbi Ihihi from Manouâat Amazighia Vol. 2
  • Shlohmo – Tomato Squeeze
  • J. Dilla featuring Phat Kat (Rapster)

Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape

19.06.09-Steve-Bell-on-To-005

The release of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi sure has kicked off a political stink.  All the fuss being made, chah!

The USA has forgotten that it’s a primarily ‘Christian’ nation, and therefore should forgive and move on.  Yeah, I know, I’m dreaming.

The US families of the Pan-Am victims are somewhat pissed, however it’s strange that the majority of the British victims are looking through a completely different set of glasses, and feel that something in the case against al-Megrahi stinks.

As you may recall, originally, the perpetrators of the bombing were thought to be of Palestinian origin, and the bombing was retaliation for the US shooting down an Iranian airliner, that took place six months prior to the Lockerbie incident. All 209  pepople on-board were killed instantly after being hit by two sea to air missiles.  The crew of the US Navy ship that targetted the Iranian airliner were rewarded with medals upon their return home.

al-Megrahi has been returned to Libya on ‘compassionate grounds’ and was welcomed home by a couple thousand people.  He didn’t get a medal, and he’ll most probably be dead by the years end.

The USA, for it’s survival it evades and is resistance to justice, escaping moral servitude.
Sometimes you have to take it even though it hurts. Sure you don’t like the taste, but that’s what happens when you fuck with people. It’s called blowback.

And now sports:

Ooh, did ya see the news that Flying Lotus is on the way to completing his new album for 2010 release? He’s also done a remix for Shafiq of Sa Ra. I dropped some of his tunes in last weeks program, you may recall should you be tuned in to what goes on in these parts.

Also due for release between now and then is the debut long player from King Midas Sound. An email exchange with the King Bug-man, Mr. Martian held information that he has just mastered the album over the previous two days.

Exciting times ahead indeed, keep those ears pinned back and on the ready.

Back to now, also lined up for travelling the high-speed cables, fibre-optics and FM airwaves, is some of that old time, new release material from Jahdan Blackamore, produced by DJ/Rupture and Matt Shadatek.  Yes, them two responsible with a few more co-horts for what is known as Dutty Arts.  The dubplate skit is tops, “What’s name of your sound?”  asks Jahdan, in reponse to the question if he voices dub-plates.  Man sound called, Moonrakerinternationalsuperficalifimarshalnopartialsoundsystemcentipedecoxmanboozemandrunkard.

Jahdan and Matt Shadetek also make an appearance in the mix from Spoek / H.I.V.I.P.  Spoek’s been a vry busy man this year, churning out mixes and productions at quite a feverish rate.  Shame on me.

After  remixing Amy Swinehouse, Bloc Party, Roots Manuva, Prince Fatty and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry  (did I miss anybody Tony?) The Moody Boys return to their own material with Freedom Dub.

Also returning to the fray are Breakestra.  Their new album will surface next month methinks.

As mentioned in last Friday’s post, The Sandinista Project was made available as a good quality download for the first time.  The Lothars version of The Call Up is on it’s own. Like the Kode9 and The Spaceape reworking of  ‘Sign of the Times’ , the only reference to the original is the lyrics, the music totally original, and so is the vocal delivery, which rides on a skanky hopping kind of rollercoaster theramin rhythm.

There you have it, plenty to get your ears around for this week.

Here Hear

vinyl_recycle_10

What do we have hear (sic)?

Ways the re-use vinyl that’s what.

Not that I plan on finding other ways to use what vinyl I have, lord no?

I just liked the picture, courtesy of Web Urbanist.

Now sports….

As I mentioned in an earlier post, on the way back from Urkult Festival, I had one day of record shopping in the noisy big smoke we call Londin.  It had been a year since I was back ‘home’ and so many record shops have closed down since.  Actually a lot of everything has closed down with new things in their place, waiting their turn to experience the financial slaughter.

One place that hasn’t shut down in Soul Jazz Records.  Seems to be a good place to hook up with Kevin ‘Da Bug’ Martin.  He pointed me in the direction of some joints by Onra (Vietnamese beats-master) and Dorian Concept (Viennese beat-maestro in the vain of  Flying Lotus, but very importantly, not a copy of FlyLo).  I didn’t even listen to them, “Carl, add these to the pile please.”   Kev’s missus, Kiki, gave me a  cd by  N’danka N’danka.  Japanese band / artist with excellent hypnotic / tribal drumming, frenzied Idris Muhammad style hi-hat action.  Highly recommended.

Our man in New Zealand, Stinky Jim runs a label called RoundTripMars, and he’s on a bit of a frenzy at the moment, with tons of records coming out.  He supplied a taster of the upcoming split seven inch featuring Jefferson Belt and UniTone HiFi.  The Jefferson track features an almighty Rastafarian spoken-word piece delivered over a weird electronica movement, very unique. RoundTripMars, they don’t do twee.

Skintologist Fritz Catlin dropped their latest production on me last week…the aptly named Biotic Dub.  It does exactly what is says on the label.

So I raise my glass to good friends with excellent taste helping me bring it home.

Ear Conditioning / Here Hear

The Spanish daily newspaper El Pias, recently had  ‘the best clubs/bars in Spain’ list, and I’m glad to report that Txola was one of the three clubs/venues/bars listed for Tenerife nightlife lovers.  Hold tight, Txola will re-open end of this month.

Also for those out Isla Baja way (that’s here in Tenerife) I’ll be returning to Los Silos to take part in the Boreal Festival Sept. 26th. We’ll be bombin’.  Big thanks to Juanjo for thinking of me.

Hasta luego.
