Ear Conditioning Transmission 17 – The Speaker Spazm

Ras G is one of the artists I wanted for this year’s Clandestino Festival, however with limited space and less money than in previous years,we found ourselves a bit stuck.  However there will now be a Clandestino stage at the Way Out West Festival, so we’ve got Ras booked to do a set there in August. Recording-wise, our man returns  with a six track EP of abstract dub-hop head pressure for Matthewdavid’s Leaving Records. With ‘El Alyien Part 1′  Ras is at his most esoteric. Bong-eyed blend of rich field recordings and crackly samples knitted togther with a bed of psychoactively charged subbass. Forward yout’!

If you live in Athens there’s a good chance you know of the Barcelona in Athens crew.  Nikos who runs things there dropped me a track from the forthcoming album from Palyrria, uptempo horny Mediterranean balkan pressure.

As mentioned here a few days ago, Filastine will be bringing his sonic assault to the shores of Tenerife next month, so here’s another excuse to crank it up with a track from the Extra Dirty Bomb EP.

Caribou step up with a new album called Swim. The track  Odessa has been given the David Wrench treatment, and it comes in the form of a drumcappela, which you can cop for nought over at RCDLBL.

I don’t know what direction I was looking in when Ninja Tune released the single by Andreya Triana late last year.  The Flying Lotus mix of Lost Where I Belong is absolutely gorgeous, lush heart-tugging harp movements and what I think is Thundercat on bass, bottom end, soulful bliss.

The following will be broadcast tonight on Sunhole at 22h00 GMT

Ear Conditioning Transmission 16 – Air Particles

Now sports….

I finally got my mitts around Leila’s album, Blood, Looms and Blooms.  It’s all in there, such detail to sound, incredible.  It’s like Autechre, DeBussy, Sarte.

Gilles Peterson is back with the next chapter in the Havana Cultura series – a compilation of  remixes transporting original Cuban grooves on ‘Gilles Peterson presents Havana Cultura: New Cuba Sound’ to the club domain. Louie Vega4heroMJ ColePhilippe Cohen-Solal from Gotan ProjectRainer TruebyCarl Cox, and homegrown Cuban producers Edgaro and Wichy de Vedado all contribute. There’s a lavish 12″ featuring reworks by Michel Cleis and Seiji. Did someone say Seiji?

Kevin (The Bug/’King Midas Sound) Martin hit me on the head  with a new Black Chow track.  Black Chow is K-Mart and Hitomi, two-thirds of King Midas.  Black Chow’s Air will surface on Soul Jazz I believe somewhat soonish.  Black Chow has found space to operate between the two aforementioned projects in a manner that goes down well in this neighbourhood.

Also on the ‘air’ tip is Dabrye, and man introduced to me via K-Mart.  This time Dabrye gets Doom involved and this track is riding on a Madlib remix.  How cool is that?

One other major thing this week, Jneiro Jarel, drops in from Viberia to lay on the Android Love Mayhem  EP courtesy of  his Label Who imprint.

Rub those mittens.

Autechre

At last years Clandestino Festival, I spent an afternoon with Leila and her tour manager brother (forgive me for not remembering his name, Ali, I think).  The previous night she performed a set which comprised of long vocal samples, her own tracks and those of others, presented via turntable, cd player, her own effects units and lord knows what else and manipulating it all sitting in front of a 24 channel mixing desk.

She started her set playing a dialogue carried by an arresting ancient voice. The subject was ‘What is art?’ or something like that.  Anyway the next day I asked her what was the dialogue she played.  Leila not only told me, but gave me about six cd’s of music and dialogues that she used in her set,  a million miles far cry away from dj’s who won’t tell you jack-shit when you ask “What track was that you just played?”

So during our afternoon taking in a bit of Gothenburg on foot, we talked briefly about Autechre.  “You’ve got to get their first album” she said with an abundance of enthusiasm.  I still haven’t got that album, but some of the bits I’ve got, they do it.  I think it was a remix of DJ Food’s Sexy Bits, then a remix of Soft Ballet Forms knocked me for six.

Apparently they’ve been about for over twenty years.  A new album is out on Warp Records soon.  Which brings me to say, Warp got it going on this year.  Also to come the follow-up  to the Los Angeles album from Flying Lotus.  Also the Gonja Sufi album which once again Mr. Lotus has a part it producing, mi madre!  Oh yeah, Mr. Lotus speaks of his new album over at Pitchfork, sez too he’s doing a Massive Attack remix, figures dunnit?!  I’m hoping it will be some of different tone that the remixes they’ve offered so far.  Anyway, back to the meat, catch up on Autechre  here:

Magnus Muhr
Magnus Muhr

Magnus Muhr creates  like no other, as you can see from above.   Yes, he finds inspiration in the simplest things.  How come nobody ever thought of this before?  Go on Magnus.  Maybe I like this series so much because I have recently come across a great way of killing flies when they enter the kitchen.  Using an empty plastic water bottle.  Got this theory that the impending doom of the clear plastic bottle isn’t detected until it’s too late, unless I’m a bit slow.  I’d estimate the kill rate is about 95%.  It’s not known if Magnus put his models into early retirement, or if they died from natural causes.

And now sports….I was digging through some of the six cd’s that Leila gave me after her appearance at this years Clandestino Festival.  Included are dialogues on art by such illuminaries as Dali, (and others…can’t read the writing on the cd’s sorry,)  Also among the pile was a track that El-P used for his Weareallgoingtoburninhellmeggamixx2, it’s by Modeselektor, and my man El-P added vocals and some El-P sonics to the track for his mixtape version.  Surprised the hell outta me believe.

New joints this week, come courtesy of the second installment of the Beat Dimensions series.  It’s got the likes of Dorian Concept, Ras G, Samiyam, Mike Slott, Nosaj Thing and Busy doing their thing.

Priming up the ears for the release of new material from Tom Waits, his label, -Anti have made several live tracks available for download, head over to www.tomwaits.com for what you need.

One of the highlights for me and others I know at Womad Las Palmas a couple years ago was Justin Adams, yes he the guitarist with Robert Plant and producer of the latest Tinariwen albums.  I believe he was supposed to perform with Judleh Camara, but visa problems I believe put a spanner in that idea, so Justin and his percussion partner knocked off a set of blues centered improvisation.  For this years Womad Las Palmas, it’s all set to go with Justin and Judleh booked to perform tracks from their new collaborative effort.  If your in the area, make an effort to catch the set if UK/African blues strokes your fancy.  Other artists confirmed are viewable on the Judleh link above.

The Electric Circus meet DJ Gavana

Top weekend was last week in Gothenborg.  Clandestino number se7en with the likes of…oh well, you know, I’ve written about it a few times before.

Great to finally see Konono No.1.  It took two years to get them into the country of Sweden, the authorities musta been thinking that Konono were part of Papa Wemba’s entourage…and stay in Sweden forever and a day suckin’ the sweet tit of Swedish social assistance.

I arrived at Clandestino just in time to catch the last two tracks from a jubilant Buju Banton.  Afterwards it was Leila’s turn. Her set started with a dialogue on art, then the noise, blips and beats proceeded to increase the pressure.  She’s unique, live mixing is her thing, and she does it well.  Her set isn’t for those that want constant 4 x 4 or danceable beats.  She’s great, gotta a interesting head on her shoulders, and a big heart.  I asked her what the opening dialogue was, and she not only gave me the name of the speaker, but also gave me about six cd’s of music and dialogue that she uses during her sets.

On the subject of using a laptop when performing, (which she doesn’t) she said, “I don’t send emails when doing a gig!”

DJ Gavana played a couple sets throughout the festival, and she presented me with a cd featuring a Steppas mix, which became the major part of this week’s program.

Timeblind and El Hijo de la Cumbia turned the place inside with their respective sets of dubstep, electronica and cumbia.  The best place to be last week fer sure.

A big thanks to all Clandestino crew, participants, attendees, staff, garbage picker uppers, and new friends.

Gilles Peterson will be headlining the Inspiracion festival in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife in August, and his label is just about to release a compilation Brownswood Bubblers 4.  The promo arrived not too long ago, and it’s got some choice gems on it, as you would expect if you follow Gilles.  I was immediately struck by the Lone contribution…possibly because of the title, and living on an island.  Check it.
