Brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal

I normally take a recorder to capture dj sets, however there is always something falling foul of the correct alignment of the planets: forgetting the press the record button, running out of juice aka batteries when the power cable is too short to reach the socket….there is always a crap reason.  The run of DJ session’s this year has been memorable for more than a minute, from the Las Terasitas beach in Santa Cruz, Mojo Club in Las Palmas, GCMN at Druga Godba Festival in Llubljana, Clandestino Festival, Micromusic TEA, the Keroxen do’s in Tenerife and in Los Jameos del Agua, Womad Fuerteventura and all points inbetween.

Inspired by and for those that turned up throughout the year, and also the people behind the voices or stories and artists contained within.

Ingredients: Guantanamo Stories from Shaker Aamer, recently released from the Yankee enclave in Cuba; political discourse and opinions from Yanis Varoufakis, whose book The Global Minotour has got me wrapped up.  Also some news from Palestine / Occupied Territories via Electronic Intifada. The Arabic discussion before that piece, is taken from a documentary about divorce in Iran.

Regarding the music and sound, contributions from the likes of Batida, Maga Bo, El Mahdy Jr. Kink Gong, The Bug, Kode9, Stereotyp, Tupperwear, Morgan Craft, KingLMan, Kiki Hitomi, Mohammed Al Madloul, Waipoo Petchsuphan, Public Enemy, Stock Hausen & Walkman; MF Doom, SK Simeon, Machinedrum, Oh No, DJ Vadim, Sol Monk, Fun’da’mental, DJ Spinn, Danny Brown, Muslimguaze, Rootsman, 16 Bit vs. Dj Leo, Manolo Viera, Job Ledesma, Mizz Beats, Jeru The Damaja, Nochexxx, Sensational, Walter Gross, theUnderachievers, The Beastie Boys, Audio Two, Gil Scott Heron, Namebrandsound, Source Direct, CDM, and RP Boo. There could be several names missing, hope it doesn’t hurt.

First DJ set of 2016 to be announced soon in Madrid come early Feb., with an appearance on RNE.  More as it happens. Hasta pronto.  All the beats, and thanks for tuning in.

Fstvl Boreal – It’s On

Website now live, schedule complete and published.
Tons of activities for young, older, and those that are almost there: Storytelling, returning turtles back into the ocean, theater, yoga workshops, percussion workshops, batucada, recycling workshops, walking trip information, sports activities….phew, outta breath, puff, puff!

Location is the super tranquil Los Silos, surrounded by the sea and mountains, can’t beat it really.  A rare intact skeleton of a Boreal whale overlooks the site.

I’ll be doing two sets, the first being  Friday night by the swimming pool, after the round-table discussion featuring the creator of the festival, Juanjo Ramos (Birding Canarias), Bernard Habis of Elementhal Events/Eolica/Rollercoaster, and Job Ledesma (Canarias Ruido).

Main activities are the following day.  See website for further details.

It’s only 8€ for the day, ya gotta support this folks, as Job wrote somewhere recently, the days of government funding and free entrance are over, people in Tenerife, and the Canaries in general, are gonna have to get used to dipping in their pockets should they want to see bands / dj’s perform.

The Boreal team, are doing what they can with very little funds from government sources, and with so many festivals not happening this year, best to hang onto what we got and make the best of it.

Filastine – Canarias Ruido / Concert

Grey Filastine arrived yesterday, mind and suitcase full of contraband, sonic weapons, political thoughts and observations, and a smile, which really came out when we hit the road for a quick scenic paseo to Benijo from Santa Cruz.  The waves of the Benijo coast sure strip preoccupations from you, ready to face the next assault that awaits like a mugger around the corner.

Job Ledesma of Canarias Ruido radio program will opened his studio doors to us tonight between 21h15 – 22h00 for an interview and to play a couple songs. Then it’ll be show time at La Sonora Republica in Honky Tonk Xpress.

You can’t say you weren’t told.

Famille Bou Bess on the radio

Ah finally, an interview that has not been edited to suit some bullshit agenda.

Yesterday Famille Bou Bess did an interview with Job Ledesma for his Canarias Ruido (Canarian noise) radio program.  Their experience and insight make you throws their age into doubt.

The interview will be transmitted on Saturday night between 20h00-21h00.   After that you should you be in the area, you can bounce up to La Orotava for they will be joining me for a session at Cafe Quilombo.  This will be like their fifth, sixth gig, so it’s still early days for them in front of an audience, so come and help them out.  As mentioned here before it’s a fund-raiser for a colleague of theirs that was illegally incarcerated and he needs funds to fight his legal case.  Entrance tax is only three euros to get in.  Most of the gigs I’ve done here have been free, so for once, dig into yer pockets you tight bastids!
