Ear Con63 – Lean Back

A brief note about this weeks episode:

New shit: The Underachievers, hip hop, sampled some classic beats (like Tribe for example) and crissing them up for now. Jehst, more hip hop, this time from the UK, he’s a producer and vocalist, great spring vibe for this tune, appropriately titled ‘Starting Over’. MCR Riddims give us a remix of ‘Hot’ with Ms. Thing riding it proper.  LV, oh, LV, gorgeous vocals over a clipped, tripped up, bass-laden, synth wave, lovers rock fing.  Ramadanman brings the drum and bass fire with Reclaim, taken from a compilation that’s out now via Critical. Benjamin Zephaniah gets together with Jazzsteppa for ‘Stronger’, a sample of the new Jazzsteppa album due out on Studio Rockers next month. The Elementz are a production team from Nottingham, UK.  They’ve done beats for and collaborated with the likes of Lil Wayne, Skinnyman and Starkey, promoting club events, give courses in sound production, and now they’ve added a label called T.E.P.L. to their bag of tricks.

First up on the label is the Bumpa Riddim, guaranteed to send shockwaves through the dance with bad Juju chants and a bass heavy style designed to make you get low!  Conjuring up a dark carnival ambiance, lashed with haunting conga’s, the Bumpa Riddim sets the precedence for the future sound of T.E.P.L.  That paragraph is from the press release, I thought it was apt, so let the words flow.

Dope shit:  The John Barry inspired Timber from Grantby. A favorite to end a session, ‘Appa’ from Badmarsh & Shri.

Ear Con 60 – Purple Moon

This weeks sixty minutes of thang holds the following in it’s mouth, Diplo remixing Travis Barker, Daedelus remixed by Sepalcure, Citymouth, more from the man of the moment, Tyler The Creator, getting worked over by J.Pants. One of my favorite records of the last 10 years is Charlie Watts, yes he of the Rolling Stones, in collaboration with Jim Keltner.  The songs on their album are named after influential drummers and percussionists.  I’m going with Airto for this week.

Last Friday, DJ Floro dropped a set at Txola, bliss, great selection across the board.  He also blessed me with volumes two and three in his Republica Afrobeat series.

Kode9’s set on the Essential Mix from a few weeks back had me looking in my broken beat section, so and i have to give Mustang’s ‘Purple Moon’ a spin, frenetic drum programming at it’s best.

Ear Conditioning Transmission 17 – The Speaker Spazm

Ras G is one of the artists I wanted for this year’s Clandestino Festival, however with limited space and less money than in previous years,we found ourselves a bit stuck.  However there will now be a Clandestino stage at the Way Out West Festival, so we’ve got Ras booked to do a set there in August. Recording-wise, our man returns  with a six track EP of abstract dub-hop head pressure for Matthewdavid’s Leaving Records. With ‘El Alyien Part 1′  Ras is at his most esoteric. Bong-eyed blend of rich field recordings and crackly samples knitted togther with a bed of psychoactively charged subbass. Forward yout’!

If you live in Athens there’s a good chance you know of the Barcelona in Athens crew.  Nikos who runs things there dropped me a track from the forthcoming album from Palyrria, uptempo horny Mediterranean balkan pressure.

As mentioned here a few days ago, Filastine will be bringing his sonic assault to the shores of Tenerife next month, so here’s another excuse to crank it up with a track from the Extra Dirty Bomb EP.

Caribou step up with a new album called Swim. The track  Odessa has been given the David Wrench treatment, and it comes in the form of a drumcappela, which you can cop for nought over at RCDLBL.

I don’t know what direction I was looking in when Ninja Tune released the single by Andreya Triana late last year.  The Flying Lotus mix of Lost Where I Belong is absolutely gorgeous, lush heart-tugging harp movements and what I think is Thundercat on bass, bottom end, soulful bliss.
