Rebel Up! Arab Street Sounds Mixtape

adf-2343149

The ever dependable Generation Bass points the way to a mixtape by the Rebel Up! dj’s Sebcat & Leblanc. “Recorded outside on the square at Recyclart  during the recent Arab Street Sounds party.  Selections of folklore, digital pop and new dance music from the Maghreb mountains to the hanging gardens of Babylon. A mixed spice blend of Arab dance music styles like chaabi, chaoui, reggada, kabyle, dabke and electro chaabi.”

I do cringe when the AutoTune gets abused, but that is just me.  Enjoy

Get to it should you have the gumption, listen here

Ear Conditioning – Body Rock

The head-nodding, body rocking, mind-bending experience.

It had to happen, didn’t it?

What?

Dublicker, a bass-heavy take on Aphex Twin’s Windowlicker. Thanks to Generation Bass for posting the link.

The Clandestino Festival, have just announced the dates for next years event, 11-14 June, and I’m onboard again, as part of the curating team.  One of the highlights will surely be Staff Benda Bilili.  The rumba-based sound this band from Kinshasa, threw me a curveball alright.  Glad to say I caught it.

My man Scalper pointed me in the direction of Fujako, who are linked up with the Wordsound label, another bed of quality, (Sensational)

The mix that accompanied the ecent post on a decades worth of Boom Bap did the job, digging out gems such as KRS-Ones’s Return of the Boom Rap.

The head-nodding, body rocking, mind-bending experience.

Antoine Dougbe – Honton Soukpo Gnon (Analog Africa)
Staff Benda Bilili – Moziki (Crammed Discs)
John Robinson – Fly Prezidente
Famille Bou Bess vs. Flying Lotus – Melting

Miss Blitz on the case

crisis-mix-copy
I’ve been wanting to get a mix from Miss Mohak for the program for quite awhile now.  As you do when your on a similar path with others, you get in touch via ourspace, or whatever social network-blog-twitter one utilizes to keep in touch with people you don’t know but would like to.
So last week Anne, as her mum calls her, said that Generation Bass had just posted her lasted mix, the Crisis Mix, so appropriate, especially if you drive a GM car,  or are a member of the  UK Labour Party.
This Friday I’ll be returning to the Teatro-Cine en Los Realejos to drop a ‘Tropicalismo Bassline’ set, either before or after the headline act which is comprised of  Kumar and MC Gothiko, alongside Panko and Max from Ojos de Brujo.
With such a lack of decent sound-systems (as in bass-bins) in Tenerife, I thought I’d use this opportunity to lay on some bottom-end movers for a change, as most joints have puny tweeters which get bus’ up when ever something heavy drops from the box.
Maybe see you on Friday.  Also dropping tuneage , the 28˚ Sound System.
Miss Blitz’ mix is perfect for getting in the mood, so dig it, it’s rich.
Congratulations to Generation Bass who have just reached the 100,000 hits mark on their site.

The trend of Autotune has not struck a like-able chord with me at all.  I fuggin’ hate it with a passion.  As soon as a track kicks in and that sound drifts up to my ears that’s it, OFF, change the channel, in a fraction of a fraction of a second.  I must however, delve further into the recent post by  /Rupture on how the use of Autotune in the Maghreb circuit is much different than that in the contemporary field that is occupied by everybody from Lil Wayne, Yeezy, etc.  Anyway, Dubterror have a new an EP out soon, and they use AT on the vocals of Horace Andy, and I think because he can sing, it’s not annoying me like AT usually does.

Generation Bass had a post last week with the words Tom Waits at the top.  So that had to be checked, and good thing too, two remixes of Mr. Waits (featuring M.I.A., Blaqstarr, Gza, The Optimist) and a Brazilian cover version.  Not bad for free huh?

It’s twelve years since the release of Company Flow’s Funcrusher Plus LP.  It’s been out of print since 2006, but Co-Flo’s El-P has re-issued the album through his Def Jux imprint.

Youssou N’dour is coming our way soon, and that is something to look forward to.  I saw him at a MOBO Awards do several years back, and he and Jill Scott were easily the best live acts on the night.  The Youssou track in this week’s pgm is a collabo’ he did with Ryuichi Sakamoto, real beauty, honestly.

Last week at Txola I dropped a zydeco version of  jimi’s Hey Joe by Buckwheat Zydeco.  Yep, that Louisiana bayou blues sound on the classics.  It definitely works.

There just aint time to be listening to shit music is there James

James is also known as Global Souljah, and he has joined the Planet Radio crew.  If your into some of what goes on hear (sic), then you’ll appreciate his program too.
