Festival Boreal

borealcarte

Hello strangers. Been tied up with getting our label onto the digital distribution thang, among other things. so the blog has been neglected.  A week friday, Sept. 19th,  is the beginning of Festival Boreal, situated by the coast of the town called Los Silos, Tenerife.  The festival came into being several years ago, born at the unveiling of a skeleton of  whale  which oversees the spot where the event now takes place.   On hand will be several local acts of various persuasions and textures, and countless activities, from the artistic, holistic, environmentally focused and the adventurous.  I’ll be doing the closing set on Saturday night, which kinda became a tradition for awhile.  The festival also returns to the coastal site, after a couple years up in the local square.

So I sign off with none other than…..’Back for another one’ by Casey Veggies Feat. Tyler, The Creator – Odd Future

Gracias a todos Borealitos, we all made it happen.  What is takes to put on a festival is an unknown entity to the majority that attend, it’s not really their concern. “just make sure there’s plenty of beer alright?!”

For awhile it seemed that after all our work, especially that of Juanjo y Evelin – a year of planning, meetings, emails, phone calls, more meetings, up and down the autopista, from one end of the island and back again countless times in an effort to secure funding – was going to be all in vain, a big fat zero.  The cut-backs in sponsorship and financing that saw many of the long established  festivals like Eolica, Aguaviva, Mueca, Costa de Musica take an enforced break this summer.

Last year Boreal was a free festival.  The motor behind the festival, Juanjo of Birding Canarias, took a hit of well over 14,000€. This year we had to charge a little entrance fee, 8€ for a full day of various activities, workshops, stalls with everything from handmade crafts, photos, massage, ecological building materials, self-designed T-shirts, community radio stations, adventure activities.  Events like this is areas such as this, far from the metropolitan centre, don’t get many events of this nature happening, so it was even more necessary for it to happen.  Boreal 2009 ran out of beer, and so to did the whole town, same with Buenavista, you see, benefits for the local economy eh!

A big thanks to all involved, all that came, took part and supported.  People like the ‘Sauzaleros and  Teo, my  bass-making friend who made mad efforts to get there after a full day working in a bar then hoping on a bus to get to the furthest part of the island to be part of the night.  Sorry my set was a bit short, you know how it can be at festivals.

See you at Boreal 2011.

As for info for tonights set, I’m come back to it later to put in links, for now, the tracklisting:

Festival Boreal

It’s that time of year again, Festival Boreal is almost upon us. La costa de Los Silos es ‘el must’ de Tenerife.

From the initial festival, two years ago,  celebrating the unveiling of a rare complete skeleton of a whale, Boreal grew last year to accomodate 5000 people,

The two heads of the festival team have worked their nuts and tits off to get this happening, and with very little financial assistance coming through this year for cultural events, the festival was almost cancelled, but a decision has been made to go ahead, instead of throwing in the towel on all our work, so this year we are going to have to charge a little entrance fee.  We need  the people’s assistance now. Many of us here in Tenerife have grown accustomed to free government sponsored events but with many events not taking place due to lack of pennies from the government, we are fortunate to get this one rolling. Entrance fee is a measly eight euros, what you sayin’?

There will be a whole heap of things going on during the day, plus events taking place from the 13th of next month, and for all ages – workshops, discussions, re-introducing turtles to the sea, photo exhibits, yoga, batucada, plenty plenty.

More details soon

Venga ya!
