Rock Solid – Música en la Bienal

Música en la Bienal at Los Jameos del Agua.

Impresionate total! / Incredible shit went down, off the hook by miles.  Never ever played in a place like this / Nunca en mi vida que he pinchando en un sitio como esa.Infuckincredible. Una initiativa muy supermegachachi. Gracias a todos. Being part of such a line-up and an environment that is Los Jameos was one of those moments that stick for a long time.

Blistering performances from all crew.  Za! always take their surroundings into account when opening their show, this was no different, they have you wondering where the sound is coming from.  This time, the trumpet came from upon high, descending the stairs to setting in front of the reflective pool and illuminated volcanic area. Listening to Lara López’ program on RNE3, I discovered that Laraaji and Brian Eno played in this very same place many years ago. Damn, that was great, gotta say. No puedo respira!

Meneo lost his travel documents, but there was no way he was going to miss his date in Lanzarote.  He arrived late, but only having to plug in his sound source, a Ninetendo or Gameboy, and that was it, no massive headache when it comes to setting up and getting right into it.

Tenerife’s Resonance brought the live element to a close his his rack of synth driven uptempo electronica.

Música en la Bienal

A week today Spain, and it’s colonies, celebrate ‘el dia de la Constitución’, a bank holiday, so no work, for some.  The team from Keroxen here in Tenerife have linked up with the people running the Culture office in Lanzarote to present something to do in a very special place.  Música en la Bienal at Los Jameos del Agua in Lanzarote.

Los Jameos are located inside the volcanic tunnel created by the eruption of La Corona. It owes its name to the existence of an internal lake which constitutes a unique geological formation.

Gonzo_DollHead_web

The line-up for next week features Gonzo, the head of the Discrepant label, which has released some real gems, the Kink Gong ‘Tanzania‘ album is easily my favourite release of the year.  Gonzo aka Gonçalo has this album  21st Century Drone Acoustics  scheduled for release soon.

Who else? Meneo is onboard, so the Tropics are going to be in full swing. Za! bring their Lololismo to the front, and Resonance celebrates two years since the release of his album Skygaze. I have the honour of the closing set.  Simone Marin aka I/O, the don of Keroxen visuals will be working the lighting element of the spaces.  Got a woody for this so badly, you don’t know!

I used to fret about making mixtapes, anyone that makes them knows the deal about having to repeatedly start again due to an error committed along the way, such as the volume too high, something turned down, off, a missed cue point, take 56, uff, enough already! I stopped fretting once I remembered it’s supposed to be fun. This selection covers nuff nuff in less than thirty minutes.  Fresh jams from Mutamassik, who came out with her new work Monday past, ‘Symbols Follow’.  It’s heavy heavy, her hardcore roots are not hidden, she is a minor threat indeed.  Last week I had a session on the beach in Santa Cruz, por fin.  Was looking forward to dropping the DRC tune, and it worked like a dream.  A lot of other joints from that session are included here, you are just missing the sand, don’t let that put you off.  Gotta give props to Patrick de Groote who organizes the Sfinks Festival.  It was through that festival I saw Máximo Jimenéz, a Colombian vallenato singer, a singer of the pueblo, of the people, he had to leave Columbia quick quick, to live in exile.  The truth damn near got him killed. Must get an update on his whereabouts.  Right, work to do.  PEace.

Socos Dúo: Album – These Times We Are Living

Next week Saturday, 15th March, we will be on hand for the presentation of the first album for Socos Dúo and the first for us as a label.  We will pop a bottle of red for sure, it’s been waiting to be opened for a while.  I walked into Arena Digital studios where I quite often work, and the sound coming out of the speakers in the control room grabbed me hard.  They were recording what is now encapsulated within a 5¨disc with the title, These Times We Are Living.

The duo, formed six years ago by broad-minded souls, César Martín and Ciro Hernandez, most uniquely combine marimba and cello, to perform selections from their new album, including works by Astor Piazzolla,  Osvaldo Golijov from Argentinia, Assobio Jato, Heitor Villa-Lobos, ‘Violence’ by Philadelphia, USA-based, 2014 Grammy nominated Joseph Hallman as well as their own  compositions, Lights and Shadows, written by Ciro, and Two Butterflies by César respectively.

This album embodies a devoted commitment to classics and to the contemporary.  Academedic foundational studies intertwined with realism, exposing human frailties and achievements and creative fortitude.

Added to the musical element is the visual and fine art of Patricia Delgado. She joins force to create an unique engraved album cover. Stains on the move, black and white, no color, representing a state of stillness and calm.

More juice via their website, or here, as we have it.

We are releasing a record, as in a vinyl record, we must be mad.

No, we´re just passionate about something.

The first record features King L Man, with Earl 16 singing.

The song is called ¨Vultures´Bazaar¨

King L Man is juvenile in name, but not in manner.

It´s my molotov cocktail.

The flip-side has LV remixing ‘Abantu’ by The Mighty Zulu Nation.

Abantu is the title of their album that Aki Nawaz of Fun-da-mental produced in 2004.

The first record will be released end of next month, via Nation Records

We are preparing to release an album by Socos Dúo, they play chello and marimba

We hope to avoid the crevice of being pigeonholed, don´t like pigeons.

Grenouille are in the final stages of recording their album too.

We are amp´d.

More as it happens.

It was a top night, the crew that built the sound system worked damn hard, basically worked 24hours straight through. We had 10 columns of speakers arranged in a circular fashion….and to think somebody (Kevin) said “One of my monitors isn’t working!”  Well, to be fair, he didn’t say it, he had to shout!

Millions of Thanks to the Keroxen team for having the faith.  We’ll be back
