Ear Con One O O

Ear Con100

What’s in the goodie-bag Mr. Wolf Watts?

More field recordings from India.  We escaped the madness and filth of Delhi, and Daramkhot was the place that received us with calm and serenity.  In McCleodganj is an area that has become a  Tibetan refuge, hence  there is a Buddhist temple there, where I recorded some 60-odd monks performing a mantra.

As far as the music is concerned, got some tunes that I bought in India in preparation for Harjinder and Mafe’s wedding party that I was to spin at.  What does one play at a Punjabi wedding?  ‘A Complete Marriage Album‘ of course.

New fresh beats are fully represented this week, with releases from Poirier collaborator Face-T, who dropped his Tuff Like Stone album earlier this year; Ill Blue with something on Hyperdub; Hot Sugar new album for NinjaTune; StayFresh grimmin’ out with ‘I Hear Ya Don’.  Leading up The Full Retard, the new joint from El-P, we’ve got a couple gems from his former group Company Flow, who incidentally just completed their reunion dates.  Apparently that’s it now for Co-Flow.  We’ll see.

End this current sound fiesta with new remix for Indigenous Resistance.  The original riddim was by Dr. Das, so the remix had to be tuff, hope you like the result.

You’ve got your monies worth for this week, later.

Portishead

Portishead producer/musician Geoff Barrow recently bumped into Thom Yorke at Paddington station, where the Radiohead frontman told him the band had just finished their latest album, The King of Limbs. “… I went, ‘Fuck off! Fucking hell, man, in the time you’ve done another record we can’t find two notes that we like that we can put together.’ And we can’t. And then we get really scared of trying it.”

Portisheasd curate I’ll Be Your Mirror for All Tomorrow’s Parties in London this weekend, Grinderman, PJ Harvey, a reunited Company Flow on the bill.

Save The World

The Copenhagen Climate Summit has come and gone.
The mud-slinging for it’s failure is in full swing with the UK and US governments laying the fault at the feet of China.
As George Monbiot of the Guardian wrote this morning…(For Obama) ‘to push a strong climate programme through the Senate, many of whose members are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the energy industry, would have been the political battle of his life.’
His campaign for the US presidency was based on ‘Change’.
Change, just not yet.
And now sports,

Connections – Minsk Calling

UNS_CD_Cover

In 2007, a gathering of like minds took place in Minsk, Belarus. The occasion was Unsound Minsk and featured Pole along side local artists, and it must have been good as it gave birth to collaborations between artists from Western Europe and Belarus. Alongside the aforementioned Pole, there is Pinch, Buben, Jacek Sienkiewicz & Arciom Kaveluski, Minorscene, The National Fanfare of Kadebostany. That’s right, I never heard of them either until now, and that’s the point. I hadn’t heard of Flying Lotus or Parliament/Funkadelic until I did, get me?  You may have an idea what Pinch and Pole sound like, what about Kassian Troyer?  His contribution would not be out of place on Chris Watson enviromental recording. Top dog!

The following tracks are available as a free download (proper quality too, not that 96kbps bullshit) and cd’s will also be given away at four events that are taking place about now in Krakow and Minsk.

See here for more information.

For this week’s radio program I’m dropping the album in it’s entirety, all backing it up with the following: contributions from Scalper, ‘Zero’ (from his forthcoming debut album which I mentioned last week); ‘Simple’ from the remastered Funcrusher Plus album by Company Flow, and a blast of South Africa’s hip hop crew Basemental Platform, their sound was very left-field like Co-Flow, disjointed beats somehow fitting together in a mind-bending kinda way. I lost the album that I had, but luckily I have two tracks burned on a cd. So that’s the radio program sorted for this week.

The trend of Autotune has not struck a like-able chord with me at all.  I fuggin’ hate it with a passion.  As soon as a track kicks in and that sound drifts up to my ears that’s it, OFF, change the channel, in a fraction of a fraction of a second.  I must however, delve further into the recent post by  /Rupture on how the use of Autotune in the Maghreb circuit is much different than that in the contemporary field that is occupied by everybody from Lil Wayne, Yeezy, etc.  Anyway, Dubterror have a new an EP out soon, and they use AT on the vocals of Horace Andy, and I think because he can sing, it’s not annoying me like AT usually does.

Generation Bass had a post last week with the words Tom Waits at the top.  So that had to be checked, and good thing too, two remixes of Mr. Waits (featuring M.I.A., Blaqstarr, Gza, The Optimist) and a Brazilian cover version.  Not bad for free huh?

It’s twelve years since the release of Company Flow’s Funcrusher Plus LP.  It’s been out of print since 2006, but Co-Flo’s El-P has re-issued the album through his Def Jux imprint.

Youssou N’dour is coming our way soon, and that is something to look forward to.  I saw him at a MOBO Awards do several years back, and he and Jill Scott were easily the best live acts on the night.  The Youssou track in this week’s pgm is a collabo’ he did with Ryuichi Sakamoto, real beauty, honestly.

Last week at Txola I dropped a zydeco version of  jimi’s Hey Joe by Buckwheat Zydeco.  Yep, that Louisiana bayou blues sound on the classics.  It definitely works.

There just aint time to be listening to shit music is there James

James is also known as Global Souljah, and he has joined the Planet Radio crew.  If your into some of what goes on hear (sic), then you’ll appreciate his program too.
