Thundercat – Off Main St.

Brainfeeder man, bass player Thundercat has dropped a new album, Apocalypse, which is doing it for a lot of people, me included. His tribute to Austin Peralta, keyboard wiz’ and label mate who recently passed away, is as one would expect, delicate and touching, a beautiful thing, as it moves into clockwork like a heartbeat with exploratory fretwork nailing down the sentiment. Not content to hide behind the bass, our man steps to the microphone, passing on messages conveying a faith that is beyond a book.

A documentary series called Off Main St. opens the door on what and who is Thundercat.

Gaslamp Killer – Headphone Highlights

The Gaslamp Killer opens up his record box for us that give a shit, over at redbull online radio Headphone Highlights series.

“So, I put together Headphone Highlights with the idea that I would give you half songs that I like to put on when I’m in an introspective mood, or like to chill and feel chill vibes, and the other half are club songs. There’s exactly half and half, so half of my favourite club bangers, half of my classic hits, how ’bout that?”

He’s got the passion and energy I dig, ya dig?

The Gaslamp Killer – Flange Face

Fresh promo arrival in the inbox this afternoon, Flange Face, the new single from The Gaslamp Killer, featuring violinist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Dread delivered with heavy beats and distortion.

This guy spins tunes the way it supposed to be done, just up my alley, with passion and sincerity.  He feels it!

He is working on an album, and naturally Gonjasufi has contributed vocals to a couple tracks.  More as it happens, meanwhile eat this…

You like bass? Thundercat

If you do bass with your coffee or tea then the debut album from Thundercat is, if not a must, then at least one listen. Who is this mf Thundercat? Check your Erykah Badu collection, and also Suicidal Tendencies. Also the lasted releases from the album’s producer, Flying Lotus. Good enough for ya?

Ear Conditioning 48 – The Show

When I was working as a press officer for Virgin Records, one of the most interesting gigs I had on my plate was going with the band Les Negresses Vertes to Beirut in 1991.  The reason being them giving the  first concert by a ‘Western’ band since the war started eighteen years previous.  One day we had a  trip via bus around the city and surrounding areas,  “This is the spot that Terry Waite was kidnapped.” The window next to the seat where my butt was parked had a bullet hole roughly head-height as in the photo above.  That photo is from the recent bruh hah hah between the Korean states.  It just seems that we are living in a big show, a massive production, whereby we are the actors and also the witnesses to absurdities seemingly without precedent. The current WikiLeaks furor is a case in point.  Very little political blow-back for those that masterminded murder, rape, pillage. No major heads on a platter. The political arena is awash with corruption that goes unpunished in most cases and accountability is just another word in the dictionary.  For it to be more than a collection of words that move air, it seems that it would require death.  So be it, but not Julian Assange’s as some commentators have said.

It’s one big fucking Show.

Now sports…..

Mr. Oizo‘s 2005 lp,  “Moustache (Half A Scissor)” album gets a re-release via Flying LotusBrainfeeder label.  Listen to the album and it all makes sense.  Apparently his label at the time F-Com just didn’t get it.

Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings have brought in Lefto and Simbad to help craft some new releases from all the records they come across in the search for the perfect beat.  Worldwide Family is a new series that sees Gilles Peterson hand over compiling duties to trusted friends of the label. Exile / grooveman Spot / Onra / TOKiMONSTA / Trilogy / Airhead / Illum Sphere / Cooly G / Zed Bias / Seiji / KU BO… and a whole host of under-the-radar talent. Volume one hits the streets Jan. 3/2011

Also due soon on Brownswood is the debut album from GhostpoetPeanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam continues a fine tradition of spoken word delivery with this man from Coventry, UK. The single, Cash & Carry Me Home is released next month, with the album to follow in February.  Tonally there is a similarity to Roots Manuva, same too with their drawl.  To be checked.

My man in Auckland, Stinky Jim, yes he, of the long running Stinky Grooves radio program on bFM and label RoundTripMars, has offered some free nuggets via the label website.  We sampled a twist on Horace Andy’s Skylarking by Jefferson Belt.  More available via the link in the tracklisting.

Thrown in near the end is a remix of Fun-da-mental’s ‘B4 I Leave’ from the Japanese edition of the ‘All is War’ album.  We’ll be making that and the other exclusive remix available to you soon…..ya dig?!

Teebs

Fuck you Gaslamp Killer.

Think your bad huh?  (You are actually, but let’s pretend I don’t think so)

There’s a track on your mix cd  ‘Hell And The Lake Of Fire Are Waiting For YOU!‘, that has captured my fullest of attention, and as you recall, you purposely did not include a tracklisting.  Hence for two years I’ve been wracking my brain wanting to know who did what, what more they got.  Well that agony is over motherfucker.

You see, there is somebody  that I don’t annoy, they likes me, hence the promo of the upcoming Brainfeeder release by Teebs bum rushed my inbox.   Brainfeeder, yeah Flying Lotus’  label, you may know of them, anyway, now I know, that unknown track that you taunted me with is on it.

Why Like This?‘ kicks off the three track single occupying the state of bliss, riding your heart via a steady thump of a beat, rising synths, sampled coins adding a silver tinge or hue, distant voices calling out in the keyboard fog.

The press release is  gracefully  appropriate, devoid of BS….As a creator of vibrant, ethereal forms in soft focus, “Why Like This?” is the tonal counterpart to the hazy alternate world conjured up in Teebs’ visual forms – A field recording from Heaven. “Arthur’s Birds” meanwhile, is a dreamlike soundscape, full of effulgent ambience in reversed sequence – the rewinding of a distant memory.

‘Arthur’s Birds’ is special, once again a thumping mighty ounce bounce of a beat and gorgeous instrumentation following the gravitational pull of a distant entity.

In shops 1 November

Hey Gaslamp, I read your not as much as an asshole as you used to be, good, your learning from our mistakes.

Ear Conditioning Transmission 16 – Air Particles

Now sports….

I finally got my mitts around Leila’s album, Blood, Looms and Blooms.  It’s all in there, such detail to sound, incredible.  It’s like Autechre, DeBussy, Sarte.

Gilles Peterson is back with the next chapter in the Havana Cultura series – a compilation of  remixes transporting original Cuban grooves on ‘Gilles Peterson presents Havana Cultura: New Cuba Sound’ to the club domain. Louie Vega4heroMJ ColePhilippe Cohen-Solal from Gotan ProjectRainer TruebyCarl Cox, and homegrown Cuban producers Edgaro and Wichy de Vedado all contribute. There’s a lavish 12″ featuring reworks by Michel Cleis and Seiji. Did someone say Seiji?

Kevin (The Bug/’King Midas Sound) Martin hit me on the head  with a new Black Chow track.  Black Chow is K-Mart and Hitomi, two-thirds of King Midas.  Black Chow’s Air will surface on Soul Jazz I believe somewhat soonish.  Black Chow has found space to operate between the two aforementioned projects in a manner that goes down well in this neighbourhood.

Also on the ‘air’ tip is Dabrye, and man introduced to me via K-Mart.  This time Dabrye gets Doom involved and this track is riding on a Madlib remix.  How cool is that?

One other major thing this week, Jneiro Jarel, drops in from Viberia to lay on the Android Love Mayhem  EP courtesy of  his Label Who imprint.

Rub those mittens.
