Fun-da-mental ‘Audio Shrapnel’ XFM Superchunk

fdm_100nations6

First broadcast in December 2001 for the Eddie Temple-Morris & James Hyman program on XFM.  Big respect to DJ Overhaul who constructed the final mix on his jack after my back put me on ice for a few days.  It represents the manner to which we hit gigs in the short time we threw down as the Nation World Service / Audio Shrapnel DJ team, throwing everything into the pile.  (Thanks to Suki for the tracklist)

Fourth World – Flora Purim & Airto Moreira ‘Terra Mae’

returnjourney

An early show of confidence from Tony Thorpe.  Back in the day, he was commissioned to assemble a collection of producers to remix songs from the catalogue of Fourth World, the group led by Flora Purim and her husband Airto Moreira.   Tony lined up a cast including 4Hero, Shut Up & Dance, IG Culture, The Herbalizer, London Elektricity, Fila Brazilia  He also tapped up a two fellas who in the basement where Nation Records operated.  Rich McLean aka DJ Overhaul and I produced two tunes in the studio, this is one of them. With the aforementioned producers involved, we had to go deep into our crates and tapes.  Honored, believe…and also to work with Rich, phew, he had a different head on his shoulders.

Daniel Edlen: Vinyl Art

daniel_edlen_jc

Arizona-based artist Daniel Edlen has been collecting vinyl since he was a teenager at art school. One day he combined his two passions of art and music, and started painting musicians on to their records. ‘The Beatles were the first,’ he says, ‘of course.’ He uses acrylic paint and prefers to use records that would otherwise be thrown away, although the flipside can still be played. ‘I like the tangibility of vinyl, the memories,’ he says. ‘I remember what the cabinet smelled like with my dad’s records, the sound of the shrink-wrap crinkling, the feel of the record in your hand as you flip it from one side to the other.’

Chrome ‘Melody’

wordd9

A pre-internet tune that could be released today an’ nobody would be any wiser.  It was on ‘The Family Album‘, compiled by Tony Thorpe for his Language label than ran in the early-mid ’90s.  I think the producer was either Optical or Matrix, which was totally out of step with that they were doing at the time. Definitely forward thinking on the beats.  And Chrome, the rapper, where is he?

“24hours of flick-through brainwashTV shite, Trapped in a maze ’til you sleep and day and rise and night, That’s when we are in our element, Wanna hear the bass-line roar, fuck the radio, that’s too innocent…”

Ear Con 111: Keroxen Closing Night

KRXN14cl05

I got a date tomorrow, the end is near, so I am preparing the digital record box…..whilst searching the deep recesses of hard drives and bending shelves for tunes for the closing night of Keroxen, I came across these documents. Some Keroxeneros like it rampt up to the max, with rave, jungle, d&b having taken a solid hold over the island back in the day. Got them covered with some modern d&b courtesy of Om Unit, then delving into the Congo Natty archive. Coincidentally, he is scheduled to play here tomorrow night also. Soundbwoy clash in Tenerife then! This goes out to all those that put in some effort to make Keroxen what is is – be it the organizers, volunteers, punters, all the artists of all persuasions, sponsors, officials at the town hall and those that hold them to their word.

“Rock and roll, what an empty generation”

Festival Boreal

borealcarte

Hello strangers. Been tied up with getting our label onto the digital distribution thang, among other things. so the blog has been neglected.  A week friday, Sept. 19th,  is the beginning of Festival Boreal, situated by the coast of the town called Los Silos, Tenerife.  The festival came into being several years ago, born at the unveiling of a skeleton of  whale  which oversees the spot where the event now takes place.   On hand will be several local acts of various persuasions and textures, and countless activities, from the artistic, holistic, environmentally focused and the adventurous.  I’ll be doing the closing set on Saturday night, which kinda became a tradition for awhile.  The festival also returns to the coastal site, after a couple years up in the local square.

So I sign off with none other than…..’Back for another one’ by Casey Veggies Feat. Tyler, The Creator – Odd Future

KingLMan feat. Earl 16/The Mighty Zulu Nation LV Remix

IMG_5260

The second release on our label is about to get out there.  I had the pleasure to lock down singer Earl 16 when he came to Tenerife for a show awhile back.  I shot the video while in London a few months back, and Alejandro Oñate put in the time to piece the video together.   This track is backed with a LV remix of a ‘Abantu’  by the Mighty Zulu Nation.  I think it was September 20o1 that we hooked up for the first time, Fun’da’mental toured with this crew, a twelve strong choir from South Africa.  I remember seeing them for the first time, at soundcheck for a show we did at Cargo in London; their voices rose majestically over our beats…my mouth was wide open, but no words would come.

FDM Director of Operations, Aki Nawaz went on to produce an album for them, hence how I got my hands on the acapella. Pleased to finally make this remix public.  For the record, it will be released July 21st, and is available via my bandcamp site, here.  XLR8R review of the original Mighty Zulu Nation album can be read here, Aki did a great job.

Spring flowers….real close up

OliverMeckes_NicoleOttawa1

Flowers are one of the great joys of spring, but viewing them under a scanning electron microscope uncovers a surreal, alien beauty. These images were created by the award-winning German microscopy team Eye of Science, comprising photographer Oliver Meckes and biologist Nicole Ottawa.

Spring Cleanin, it’s only now that I have come across this draft of a post that I started….uh, three years ago!

What don’t you get with mpfreeze?  Information, that’s what.

Spending time gazing over album covers,  checking artwork, info on the producer, studio, singers and players, engineers, catering, dealers, seeing the links to other artists etc.  It’s a great thing.  Which brings me to Nasa.  The name featured on many Def Jux productions, Cannibal Ox, El-P, The Presence, Mr. Lif, to name four. He was the chief engineer for the label from 2000 to 2005.  Been wondering what this cat has been up to, and I was brought up to date.  After leaving Def Jux around 2005, he set up the label, Uncommon Music.

If progressive hip hop is your thing, hit his bandcamp, plenty to settle your nerves there, including his taking on Death Grips, get it for free.

I am not here anymore, because I am there, catching up on what he’s been doing since I initially started this post!

Mapa Sonoro 45

Watts-german 01

Spanish TV music program Mapa Sonoro, takes it name because it travels around the country, and it’s territories, such as the Canary Islands.  It is creating a national map of sound.  Episode 45(rpm)

Somebody had my back, El Especialista Manel, a dj based in Las Palmas, recommended me to the program producers, so the producers called me up, and we spoke about Canarian culture, my habits, daily routine etc.

The program fixed me up with Germán López from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.  He plays the Timple, a five string instrument, that is very common in these parts.  It is not to be confused with the Ukelele.  I had been casually looking for a Timple player for nearly two years, and the wait was worth it.  He played one of his compositions, called Lux, a delicate melody evoking the surroundings hit my ears, and that was that.  Really keen to do a respectful remix of this asap, then get my butt over to Las Palmas for another studio session with the man.

Major thanks to the crew of Mapa Sonoro: Carola Guerreo, Roberto Herroros and Xavi Lensman.

Mapa Sonoro45 Part 1

Mapa Sonoro45 Part 2

Mapa Sonoro takes a break after the show46, but there are plans for the show to return next season.  If your into music that is made in Spain and it’s colonies, check it.
