Canarian Politricks

Africans are good business

My neighbor  is Paulino Rivero, the President of the Canarian Government, he is president because he is the head of the party Coalition Canarias (CC), they make out to be putting the Canarian people first, as opposed to the ‘other’ major or national parties, such as PP (read Conservatives) and PSOE which are supposed to be ‘Socialist’.

My problems with CC have been an ongoing, one reason being those sons of bitches have been playing the immigration card for quite awhile now.  Things on the surface in recent times have been quiet lately, increased surveillance to keep those damn Africans off the beaches and streets of the Canary Islands has done it’s job, with boats with Africans seeking a better life, being intercepted a lot further out at sea by the European Frontier police, Frontex or some shite.  Cooperation in a  TV ad campaign in Senegal featuring Youssou N’dour encouraging people not to risk their lives with the perilous journey from the Senegal coast to the Canary’s seems to have helped as well.

Here in Tenerife there were at least two centres that housed under-18 African immigrants, they have recently closed down.  They were run by Nuevo Mundo, an NGO created by Coalition Canarias.  Wait a minute, a non-governmental organization set up by a political party? Isn’t that what you call non-sensical?

During my year-long stint with Famille Bou Bess, we did a gig at one of the centres and I’d say the executives from Nuevo Mundo that were there were more sunglass wearing no-neck security-guard meathead types than concerned social / youth workers.  I’d heard about some of the devious practices they employed. maltreatment of their charges,  with-holding the pocket money for unknown infractions.  Being punished and not knowing why.  Not fixing the broken windows in a place that is the coldest part of the island, removing the doors of the dormitories etc.   Doors and intact windows are very much required up there.

Now news has surfaced out about how much this NGO has been raking in.  Their profit from running the centres, was check this, 36,000€ a day.  Yes, in one fucking day, over one million euros a month.

The story about the financial windfall that Nuevo Mundo hasn’t been picked up by the mainstream, too much ad revenue money coming in from the government I suppose. But you can find it here in Spanish.

The politicians have made good headway running African immigrants into the ground with their hysteria, fear-mongering, etc.  And as usual their associates are making a financial killing on the back of it.

Is the current state of mainstream politics in general set about to completely turn us off?  With only something like 19% of the population voting for the current CC mayor in our capital local Santa Cruz, one could come to that conclusion.  People can’t be arsed to doing anything, and it takes just a few from the right, to get organized and continue ’bout their business.  I don’t bloody know.

The struggle continues

Ear Conditioning 32 – Adjust the Treble and Bass

Crash, bang, wollop.  Today’s program was almost wrapped up until I checked the inbox.  Freshly minted beats and rhymes from the Foreign Beggars.  Following on from their ‘United Colours of Beggattron’ album, Beggatron REmixed 2, a package that’s pushing some weight. Detroit legend Dabrye, Om Unit, Planas (Ranking Records), Blue Daisy (Black Acre), Diverse Concepts and world dj champ and producer DJ Troubl & Dj 2 Tall. Guest vocalists include rappersJehst, Kashmere, Ben Sharpa (Pioneer Unit South Africa), American soulstress and ex – Macy Gray/Plantlife vocalist Audra Nishita and newly celebrated Graziella of Miss Frank

Starting the proceedings this week however we have Mech, a producer from Gran Canaria.  For his contribution to the program, he’s taken a classic isa and rewired the components to bring traditional Canarian folk music into the age of now.  Mech is part of the Colectivo +0 crew, who are in the midst of putting together an event featuring Mech and myself in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria at the beginning of October.  More details as they come in.

Ninja Tune are celebrating twenty years in the game, and hence they are about to release an absolutely massive box set, featuring lord knows how many tracks.  The package clocks in at around 60 tracks or something.  In line with this, Ninja are giving away a track a week via their website, hence The Herbalizer contribution, remixed by Roots Manuva, who also has his own remix package coming out next month.

Sitting on my shelf is an album by the folks that put together the All Tomorrow’s Parties.  I haven’t dug this album out in a long time, which is a crime.  Who is on it?  Boards of Canada, Autechre, Mike Ladd, Co Flow, Cannibal Ox, Prefuse 73, Tortoise for starters.  Seek and enjoy.

Without a doubt, one of the pioneers in electronic music was World Domination Enterprises.  They captured a vibe that was present in London in the late ’80’s, alongside the likes of Renegade Soundwave, Mutoid Waste Company, and that Jack Dangers produced band whose name as presently escaped me, Meat Beat Manifesto.  While recently in London, I passed by the building that used to be home for the Mute group of labels.  Mute have now moved within the offices of EMI, however the new building on the former Mute site, is now called Miller House, in honour of Mute founder Daniel Miller, how about that?!

Coming back to now, we have a track from the long player from Mala, a collection of three vinyl slabs for you to meditate on.

Well that should do you for now.

Tune in via Sunhole dot net from 22h00 GMT tonight.

Oh, in case you do feel like showing up, I’ll be at Txola este viernes desde 23h00

Friendshit

I used to have a really good friend, like FRIEND in CAPITAL LETTERS.  A real best mate, who turned out to be a complete and utter paranoid malicious prick.

We got a job, both of us, helping organize a festival, looking for artists etc.  I thought ‘cool’, we are a team, yet this guy had the balls to phone up my house and ask my missus, “Why am I getting a gig, I’m only a DJ.?”

Another choice one was when he was booking me for a gig at Carnaval….only one thing, I would not be allowed to see the contract.

He tells me that is normal business practice….where, in your head or generally?  Fuckin’ punk ass.

To overcome his mental fuckries  I take a dose of the Public Image Limited album called ‘Album’ and crank up ‘F.F.F’.

Senseless reasoning
You believe what you want to believe
Farewell my fair weather friend
On you no one can depend
Bad times
Now they must end

Whatever you want it to be
For you that’s what it will be
Honesty to you is arbitrary

Logic is lost in your
Cranial abattoir

Shallow
Empty inside
Sly witted
Full of snide

Bad times
Now they must end

The shutter-speed of your thinking process
Is small
Too small
Too full of pride

Bad times
Now they must end

Farewell my fair weather friend
Bad times
Now they must end
Farewell my fair weather friend
Farewell my fair weather friend

Bad times
Now they must end

You used to be nice
Now you’re twice as nice
You used to be good
Now you’re too good

Farewell my fair weather friend
Bad times
They must end
On you no one can depend
Farewell my fair weater friend

Logic is lost in your cranial abbatoir
Shallow
Empty inside
Sly-witted
Full of snide
The shutter-speed of your thinking process
Is small
Too small
Too full of pride
Lost in a storm

Farewell my fair weather friend

Rollercoaster Fstvl

This summer music lovers here in the Canary islands are having do to without most of the festivals that generally take place during this period, there’s no Eolica, Aguaviva, Salpica festivals in Tenerife. In Lanzarote, Costa de Musica looks like it ain’t gonna happen. Government financial assistance ain’t around like it used to be, you know the crisis.  The ‘crisis’ was the excuse for Puerto Muerto de la Cruz council not funding the Mueca street festival and the Ecological Film Festival,  however the politicians that fought over Mueca soon embraced each other with the announcement of the planned train line that is to run all through people’s back yard, living rooms etc.  They are some callous son’s of bitches, no doubt.

Anyway with all this doom and gloom about, the producer of the Eolica Festival, has managed to secure a slice of the little financial pie that is left for cultural events and is putting on the Rollercoaster Festival, the idea being people need a little pick-me up since there ain’t been much happening here on a certain level all summer.

La entrada para Rollercoaster es muy barato, 10€ en venta anticipada.  Se quiere  màs informacíon, pulse aqui.

Heavy Heavy Load

It’s a great week for some, a shit sandwich for others. With the posi-drive in hand, there is tons of new tunes – from the Ivory Coast, powerhouse crew CIAfrica, with /Rupture delving into the hard drives to select snyth-devastating coarse dense dancehall, switch hip hop beats, pro-black fist mentality reality lyrics. Bouncing while standing firm, no holding back, stabbing fuck-me bass-lines unleashed dropping mayhem, check ‘Babylon Advisory’  a perfect example.  Our Clandestino Festival crew have a stage at the Way Out West Festival in Gothenburg this weekend. /Rupture’s Nettle outfit will also be gracing the stage, so too  Ras G, Rango, Mutamassik. Is that good enough for ya?  On the other stages/tents will be the likes of xx, M.I.A. the Chems, Jay Electronica, Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek, Pavement, Mary Anne Hobbs…..yeah, you get it now,  it’s effing huge.

Mutamassik by the way has edited and produced a video for  Take the Hit from her latest album, That Which Death Cannot Destroy. Viewable here.  I don’t know what’s in the water in Tuscany where Mutamassik and her partner Morgan Craft live, maybe it has nothing to do with it, actually it has sweet eff all to do with how productive they are.  Morgan just made me aware of a round table discussion that he participated in with Matthew Shipp (Anti Pop Consortium, El-P, Springheel Jack) and Mark Lomax a Columbus, Ohio-based drummer, composer, and bandleader. In addition to leading his Trio, Quintet and Afro-Chamber Ensemble, Lomax has worked with, among others, Marlon Jordan, Ellis Marsalis Quintet, and Azar Lawrence. I haven’t finished reading all of it yet, you can start here in the meanwhile.

64meg of a King Midas Sound remix is the perfect counter to the lingering CIA rough-house with a spacious vinyl reverbed enhanced bliss zone.  CV313 handed over the files to Mr. Kevin Martin, and he in turn entered how much I don’t know into his studio mind. Roger Robinson’s Trini-‘scent vocals start the proceedings with a little discourse on what it’s like, how you know you’ve met the one. Hitomi takes over laying out the comforting arms.  Excellent use of space.

El-P’s third installment of the ‘Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixx‘ series hit the streets last week, in many formats.  The physical versions have an added bonus, links to download the previous two editions that were limited to 500 cds and only sold on tour.  One of the digital versions has stems of one of the beats, so you can jack and rework to your hearts content.  Skip to Passion of the Weiss for a lengthy interview with the man.

I bought the Silkie album last week, titled City Limits Vol.1, it certainly captures and re-presses that all-embracing London ting.  The opener is an epic 8 and a half minutes, he works it. This is a gorgeous album, threatening and calming. If 4Hero started out now, they would sound like Silkie.

Indigenous Resistance come back again with a Sawandi reworking of the Galdino Jesus dos Santos track that came out earlier this year.  The bass is sitting just right, and the drums criss, and they carry the terrible story of how the vocalist met the family of the murdered Galdino, and how they showed photos of his charred body, burns to over 90% of his body.  The killers, sons of the elite basically walked, after all, it was only a ‘joke’.

This week is a heavy heavy load indeed, you have to be physical fit.

Tune in via sunhole dot net tonight at 22h00GMT, otherwise you catch the repeat same place at 11h00 every weekday morning.

More as it happens,

Festival Boreal

It’s that time of year again, Festival Boreal is almost upon us. La costa de Los Silos es ‘el must’ de Tenerife.

From the initial festival, two years ago,  celebrating the unveiling of a rare complete skeleton of a whale, Boreal grew last year to accomodate 5000 people,

The two heads of the festival team have worked their nuts and tits off to get this happening, and with very little financial assistance coming through this year for cultural events, the festival was almost cancelled, but a decision has been made to go ahead, instead of throwing in the towel on all our work, so this year we are going to have to charge a little entrance fee.  We need  the people’s assistance now. Many of us here in Tenerife have grown accustomed to free government sponsored events but with many events not taking place due to lack of pennies from the government, we are fortunate to get this one rolling. Entrance fee is a measly eight euros, what you sayin’?

There will be a whole heap of things going on during the day, plus events taking place from the 13th of next month, and for all ages – workshops, discussions, re-introducing turtles to the sea, photo exhibits, yoga, batucada, plenty plenty.

More details soon

Venga ya!
